“Top place for a seafood lunch”
Reviewed July 7, 2014

Trader Jacks is right on the water, just up the road from the town centre. Get an outside table on the covered verandah and you are overlooking the water. Top spot! We ordered the seafood plate for two. Very reasonably priced at around NZ$80. Full of excellent cold and hot morsels including sashimi, sushi, prawns, oysters, calamari, scallops etc and half a lobster. Great value. With a local Matutu beer you can't go wrong. Service a bit slow, but that's the Cook Islands for you. No hurry anyway.
Very enjoyable sunny afternoon. Gotta watch the time though because they shut right on 2pm so forget any ideas about a late lunch.

“Go for the view - the food is a bonus”
Reviewed July 7, 2014

We dropped in a couple of days early and asked for a special order of Ika Mata with no onion. We had it here before and it was delicious but played havoc with an onion allergy for one of our group. Rosa was happy to help and when we arrived at our allotted time, two days later, she remembered. She had briefed the chef and the waitstaff and we got our serves of fish without onion and it was DELICIOUS!
Overall the location on the water in Avarua is the perfect spot to while away some time for a chat with a drink, and the food here is great so that's an added bonus too.
It's become a place we go every time we visit now because the food is great, the drinks are cold and the staff are lovely.

“Reality doesn't really meet Reputation”
Reviewed July 6, 2014

We had dinner here one night. The staff were a little non-interested and the meals were average. I ordered a meal that had crab legs wiith it but it took another staff member to realise that they hadn't given me the right utensils to be able to eat the meal !!

“Nice Lunch”
Reviewed July 5, 2014

Visited for lunch and got a table by the edge of the deck. Good views and after some crap weather it was nice to sit in the sun. Staff were attentive and the food was decent pub grub. I had pork tacos which were pretty good but they had run out of sour cream and strangely replaced this with mashed potato. Worth a visit for a reasonably priced meal.

“Very disappointing!”
Reviewed July 5, 2014

We visited Trader Jack's for lunch towards the end of our holiday and were very disappointed.
It's in a lovely spot and is reasonably priced, but that's the best we can say.
We were greeted by very indifferent staff, who were not at all attentive during our meal.
I ordered the panko crusted soft shell crab and my husband ordered the pork tacos.
What I received was a salad with 4 meagre, burnt and very sorry looking pieces of deep fried crab. They were horrible. My salad dressing (which was supposed to be a ginger ponzu dressing) also just tasted of soy and was very unpleasant.
My husband's pork tacos were seriously lacking in pork and were accompanied by a very sad looking pot of limp, picked vegetables and a questionable lump of bean mash, which still held the shape of whatever container or tin it had been dug out of.
Overall, very disappointing.
