I was very impressed that the housekeeper took the time to come introduce herself and chat. Despite minor hiccups with the reservation, the staff promptly corrected the situation and was very accommodating from start to finish. Absolutely beautiful surrounding and a very short drive from nearby trailheads.

We booked 2 nights at Qwins Lodge and the accommodations were pleasant and the cabin cute and roomy. We knew there would be music that evening,we were told in advance that it would end at midnight. Well the LOUD music continued until 2:30 AM!!
Needless to say we were very upset and disappointed. In the morning we went to the front desk to complain and were told that they had no control over when the venue ends. How can they not have control over this? If folks knew in advance that this NOISE would continue into the wee hours of morn no one would stay here! Needless to say we checked out for fitting our $230.00. Stay at Qwins Lodge if you care not to sleep there is no getting away from the music.
Disappointed, SC

Room tip: Ask to be as far away from the music venue as possible

We stayed a night on the way back up the Peninsula. Pretty basic but clean. Floor at a definite downward slope. One of the lamps out of order. Not a bad place in a beautiful location across the river. Just seemed a little high for the décor. Maybe paying for location? Then again, everything in Alaska seemed to cost twice as much as comparable services/hotels in many areas of lower 48.

I stopped in early to get coffee for my friends and while waiting saw some scrambled eggs go to a table, I knew we'd come over for breakfast!

We three arrived in time to take the last table in the room. The staff is very friendly and happy. I like that! Because of the full house she apologized for any delays. We ordered eggs, home fries and toast, and all were good.

We noticed on the menu that the kids breakfasts were served with "soda" and mentioned to the waiter that it would be a healthy idea to change that to milk or orange juice.

The atmosphere of the lodge is historic and rustic, we loved it and asked for the history. We're glad it hasn't changed much over the years!

Good job, Gwin's! You make Alaskans proud.

I stayed here a couple days ago. The staff was great. The cabins are affordable compared to the overpriced hotels all over Alaska, though still expensive compared to what you get for the money in the lower 48 states. I believe I paid about $140 for a 100 sqft cabin with a shower, no tv, no phone, no wifi. There was a weak wifi signal in the bar only. If all you need is a bed and a shower then this is a good place for you. The location surrounding the lodge is gorgeous!!! Russian falls is a short hike away and there are plenty of lakes, rivers, mountains, and forests around. Also, Cooper Landing is a central location between Seward, Homer, Whittier/Girdwood, so if you dont mind driving a couple hours a day this would be an ideal headquarters while exploring all over the Kenai Peninsula. If I come back to Alaska again in the future, I will probably do just that. I would stay here again so long as I didnt need wifi, and the wifi in the bar at least works.

Room tip: dont expect wifi and you wont be disappointed

Keith M, General Manager at Gwin's Lodge and Roadhouse, responded to this reviewResponded August 7, 2016

Great thank you! This IS the ideal home base for a Kenai Peninsula vacation. It is across from the Kenai River and the Russian River Confluence and Ferry is just down the road. Gwin's Lodge is in the Kenai Mountains vs. the flats of Soldotna. Gwin's Lodge is on the DRY SIDE of the mountain... Seward gets 3x more rain than here. There are fantastic trails all over up and down the road right here. On Internet: We have the fastest internet available and we upgraded again this year 30% faster. TelAlaska only has DSL here and the population of smart phones expands faster every year. Until the (only) provider has onsite fiber to this part of a remote National Forest, expectations need to be in line with reality. And if we supply a larger WiFi area, then more people get on it and it will not respond in the restaurant. For star ratings, some people base it on an absolute scale; like 5 stars for a Hilton for example, vs. say 3 for Gwin's Lodge. Others give ratings relative to their happiness with the experience and expectations for a fishing cabin and Roadhouse. In that case Gwin's Lodge and the Hilton can both be 5 stars without conflict. Thanks and we look forward to serving you! Smoked Salmon Chowder, Carrot Cake and homemade fries are waiting!
