Description: The historic Gwin's Lodge is located in Cooper Landing in the Kenai Peninsula in south central Alaska, which is known as "Alaska's playground." We are the closest lodging near the confluence of two world-class salmon streams - the Kenai River and the Russian River. Gwin's Lodge is open seven days a week serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and has 17 cabins that can each accommodate 4 to to 6 guests with two cottage houses that can each accommodate up to 12 guests.

This roadhouse has been here as long as I can remember. It is a true atomphere of the early Alaska. The food for the most part is very hearty and good. It is just a fun place to eat.

Gwin's is a disaster. The food is overpriced, previously frozen junk. The service is horrible, mainly because of the kitchen taking so long. This place used to be okay, but multiple new owners can't seem to make it work.

Satisfaction is guaranteed. Of course Angus beef in Alaska is frozen. It is $5/lb. so it costs about 2/3 more than normal beef. There have not been "multiple new owners." I am the owner for 5 years. The prior owner had been here since the mid-1990s. Helen Gwin before that. After Helen there was one lessor operating it but Helen was the owner. Most everyone I have talked to say the food is better than prior. Being a local, you clearly have an agenda promoting competitors that cost more yet complain about price. A half pound Angus burger with homemade fries is $12.95. It can be $15.95 in Anchorage where they operate all year and have much lower insurance rates than my now lowered $40,000 year.

It's been years since my wife and I had eaten there, but we decided to try it again. We actually celebrated our 30th anniversary there a couple of weeks ago. New ownership (as of 5 years ago) has brought about some nice changes. While the menu did not include steaks, what we did order was very good. I had the chicken fried steak, and the gravy was excellent. Many places use a water based gravy, which I'm not fond of, but Gwin's uses a dairy based gravy. Very tasty! My wife had the cod fish and chips, and was very pleased. The atmosphere is still the same as it was years ago, still the same old slanted floor, but that's part of what makes it Gwin's. The service was excellent. They still have a very nice bar selection of beer, wine, and spirits. The dessert menu was very enticing, but after finishing the main course, neither of us had room for dessert. They will also be open on a limited basis through the winter, so we are looking forward to stopping in on our trips to and from Anchorage during the "off season".

We were overcharged for 2 items from the menu. We were "upcharged" for the cup of soup that supposedly came with the "soup and sandwich." Young waitress said she could remove it if I wanted. To which I said yes. We were overcharged for another item, but, I just deducted it from her tip since it was obvious from her flushed face that she knew what she had tried to do when she was asked about it. The place was not particularly crowded at 2PM, but, all the empty tables were still dirty/not cleared.

Sorry about that. Servers have zero incentive to overcharge you. It was a mistake. Servers DO have incentive to make you happy. Servers can be lazy at times, getting distracted talking with co-workers, and we will have a different work standard next season. Thank you.

Large portions of everything. Taste is great! The only bad thing is you want to eat it all!! Sweet potato fries are sooo good! Burgers big and moist. Breakfast burrito is huge and full of so many things. Chicken fried steaks tasty and the best mashed potatoes!
