Description: The historic Gwin's Lodge is located in Cooper Landing in the Kenai Peninsula in south central Alaska, which is known as "Alaska's playground." We are the closest lodging near the confluence of two world-class salmon streams - the Kenai River and the Russian River. Gwin's Lodge is open seven days a week serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and has 17 cabins that can each accommodate 4 to to 6 guests with two cottage houses that can each accommodate up to 12 guests.

This is a true Alaskan eating experience. The rustic setting is authentic and the food comes not only in Paul Bunyan portions but is something you'll wish you had room for more. The guy on the grill named Ken was cheerful and went out of his way (even digging out a map) to suggest areas we should explore before moving on. The burgers are humongous, the fries plentiful and the smoked salmon chowder is just outstanding.

This is the beginning of our third week in Alaska. We've been in Seward, Homer and points in between. Yes, Alaska is expensive but some places are a lot more expensive than others. Gwin's gets high marks for atmosphere with beams in the ceiling and log bar stool and furniture. Everything you think of when you think Alaska. If you want character, this is it. We bellied up to the bar by the food area so we could watch the kitchen action while we waited for our food and ate. Ken, who was cooking that afternoon, asked if we had ever had salmon chowder. Of course we had not. He went over and brought us a sample to taste. Talk about "POS" (positively outrageous service). We had to order the salmon chowder after tasting it. It was excellent. We watched other meals going out and they were MASSIVE portions of food. Again, lots of food for a fair price. Our experience was great customer service and we hope to be able to stop in again. We did not get the feeling it was the "end of their season" and that they were burned out from the summer. Since I own a lodge and have been in lodging for over 30 years, I think I know customer service and an atmosphere with lots of character. If you want something different, this is it.

The fried halibut was excellent. Burger good. Fries were properly cooked, hot and flavorful. At the end of the season they were out of a lot of desserts.

We stopped at Gwin's to get a fishing license at the start of our trip and for dinner on the way home. It's a fantastic place to get a beer and a burger although they have a variety of items that looked solid (Fish, steak etc). I had the Glacier IPA and the blue cheese burger, and both were very good. Definitely recommend for a stop - the bartender was friendly and efficient and it was a fun crowd.

"Burger and carrot cake something to look forward to!" Thanks for your review and complement! 5 stars are much appreciated. The TA scale is not absolute but is relative to what the place is trying to accomplish. We are not a 5 star restaurant or hotel but an original PRE-Statehood fishing lodge and roadhouse with an overall guest experience we believe is represented by 4 or 5 stars.
