This is the beginning of our third week in Alaska. We've been in Seward, Homer and points in between. Yes, Alaska is expensive but some places are a lot more expensive than others. Gwin's gets high marks for atmosphere with beams in the ceiling and log bar stool and furniture. Everything you think of when you think Alaska. If you want character, this is it. We bellied up to the bar by the food area so we could watch the kitchen action while we waited for our food and ate. Ken, who was cooking that afternoon, asked if we had ever had salmon chowder. Of course we had not. He went over and brought us a sample to taste. Talk about "POS" (positively outrageous service). We had to order the salmon chowder after tasting it. It was excellent. We watched other meals going out and they were MASSIVE portions of food. Again, lots of food for a fair price. Our experience was great customer service and we hope to be able to stop in again. We did not get the feeling it was the "end of their season" and that they were burned out from the summer. Since I own a lodge and have been in lodging for over 30 years, I think I know customer service and an atmosphere with lots of character. If you want something different, this is it.
