We've just returned from a week in idyllic Aitutaki - a beautiful little island. We were married here 3 years ago and returned to make sure our coconut tree was still growing!
Tamanu Beach was excellent accomodation and the staff were very obliging. Our unit was spacious, clean and everything was there if we felt like cooking a meal - lovely clean bathroom. Bed was huge and comfortable.
The swimming pool was about ten steps away, then ten steps further was the lagoon. Breakfast was ample - would recommend Koru Cafe for a cooked breakfast, or any meal for that matter. Staff were helpful at Tamanu Beach with organising excursions etc.
Scooters were great for getting around - zoomed as far up Maunga Pu as far as we could go, then walked the rest of the way, for a view right around Aitutaki. Island night should definitely be on anyone's bucket list. So too, should a lagoon cruise. We went with Teking for the day - great guide and well worth the money.
Now, back to reality .... we would recommend not wasting time in Rarotonga. Come to Tamanu Beach at Aitutaki and you definitely will not be disappointed. $99 flights (return from Raro) specials are available 3-4 times a year, which makes the trip more affordable.
We'll be back when our palm starts bearing fruit in 2-3 years time ...... :)

We stayed at Tamanu in late February 2012 for 7 nights for our Wedding and Honeymoon. The resort has two parts, 200 rooms is the newest part and have a separate bedroom and small kitchenette. The 100 rooms, where we stayed, is the older part of the resort but not that you could tell. It was sparkling clean and tidy with no complaints at all. The 100 rooms have a full kitchen and air conditioning. This part of the resort also has the best swimming pool (infinity) with an awesome view of the lagoon. We had a package deal which included a garden view room (the back four bungalows which also get a glimpse of the lagoon) and we were upgraded at no cost to a lagoon view bungalow (109). The 100’s don’t have a TV and as it turned out we didn’t miss it at all. The kitchen was handy to make at least one meal a day and we had a complimentary tropical breakfast at the resort and ate out for the other meal. The breakfast was fine with fruits, cereal, toast, orange juice, coffee and tea. If they ran out we asked for more and it was never a problem. The restaurant is beach front and has great views. The island night is a must do. The staff and service was excellent at all times. We found them to be very friendly and accommodating to all requests. They helped with our wedding plans supplying head and neck flowers (eis) and we had a romantic dinner on the beach in front of the resort at no extra charge. We would definitely recommend this resort and would stay there again without hesitation. The snorkelling was great in front of the resort. Take some reef shoes and we took our own snorkel and mask for convenience. There are fish everywhere. The best beach for just swimming would be Ootu, a short scooter ride just out past airport. We had a half day rain and the odd shower at night. The temperature was 27 to 30 at all times. We hired scooters and explored the island, went on an excellent private lagoon charter with Black Pearl. Can’t wait to go back to Aitutaki. Tamanu is affordable and very comfortable. Rooms are serviced daily and the staff are more than obliging and Tamanu lives up to its “Casual Luxury” title.

Room Tip: The cheapest rooms are the best value (garden view). They still have a lagoon view and they have the...

Had 5 fabulous night in beautiful Aitutaki. The staff at Tamanu Beach were friendly, the facilities great with a beach front view of the lagoon. Great place for a romantic get away as well as lazy days lying on the beach, snorkelling and kayaking.

Sparkling clean resort, spacious bungalows. Friendly, welcoming people. I agree with another reviewer there were lots of tiny ants so be very careful not to spill any food or beverages or there will be a swarm! There is some bug killer stored under the sink. The breakfast buffet offered generous amounts of fruits, juice, toast, coffee and tea. The restaurant is open breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lagoon is amazing, but I found it difficult to snorkel from shore as the lagoon bottom was literally blanketed with sea slugs and I couldn't bring myself to step on top of them. The pool was sparkling. We stayed between Christmas and New Years and had the opportunity to experience a stalled tropical storm for 4 solid days - wind and a lot of rain, fortunately the temperature stayed in the mid 80's. The last day on Aitutaki greeted us with calm and some sun and we headed out on the Black Pearl with Mike and Mere for an absolute amazing breathtaking day of snorkeling, sightseeing, and beach walks on small deserted islands in the lagoon. We even visited "Survivor" island. Be sure to rent some form of transport so that you can see the entire island.

Room Tip: All bungalows offer a partial lagoon view. There are three waterfront, but if want to save a little...

Stayed at Tamanu for the last week of the year. Maybe it was just an assumption on our part, but we didn't think wet season meant almost continuous cloud cover and a lot of rain. Not the resorts fault obviously, but beware of this when you travel to the Cooks. We (daughter) found the staff to be extremely friendly and very helpful. Whatever they could help with they were very willing to do so. The room, towels and linens were very clean. Itty-bitty ants in the room, but not a big deal. I think a car or scooter is a must, and the rental company will pick you up (not Enterprise) and drive you to their location. The resort has kayaks for the taking, and lounges on the beach. If you choose to do so you can snorkel directly in front of the resort, and it is perfect for swimming and lounging.
Meals at the resort depend on what your expectations are. The morning buffet is rather skimpy, but you can always have hot food cooked from the menu. Take a scooter and explore all of the various cafes and grills around the island. All in all you should be very happy if your choice is Tamanu Beach Resort. WARNING: there are roosters all about that have no clue as to when sunrise is, nor when the are supposed to crow. They will start crowing around 3 am and continue until about 7 pm. This will occur right outside your open windows. so hopefully you are a very deep sleeper!

Kia Orana miacircleman and thanks for your nice review of Tamanu Beach. It was very nice meeting you and your family, and we are pleased that you enjoyed yourselves, despite the not-so-spectacular weather that unfortunately happened during your stay. Thanks for your kind words about our staff. We are so proud of our local, Aitutaki staff - they are, after all, ALL family members of ours! Stayed at Tamanu for a week in June 2011. Aitutaki is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, and we loved our stay at Tamanu. Their slogan is 'casual luxury', and sums the vibe of the place up pretty well... if you're after high end 5 star accommodation with top notch service, go to Aitutaki Lagoon (and pay double the price).

This was just a great, laidback resort with a very nice stretch of beach, pool, lovely restaurant and friendly staff. The huts were clean and comfortable. If we are coming back to Aitutaki (I hope we will!), I would definitely stay there again. It was lovely.

We vacationed at Tamanu Beach on Feb 10, 2010 and experienced Cyclone Pat. We were treated as family during this horrific event and Thank you very much to the Henry's and staff. February 2011 we returned to have our vacation of a lifetime and were treated like royalty, thanks so much again. Teking took us out into the lagoon and we were amazed beyond words, this is the best place on earth! The people are so helpful and friendly, we were safe to roam around, day or night. The food at Tamanu was delicious and the staff were lovely.
I have to say that this is a great place for Canadian's to come as this is their summer and it is really quiet, we are planning on returning again in the next few years.
