If you are looking for 5 star accommodations with 5 star food & 5 star service, this is not the resort you want to book. If you are looking for 5 star plus views and location, 4 star everything else we cannot recommend this resort highly enough. We very nearly did not book this resort due to some of the scathing reviews, not staying there would have been our biggest regret. As seasoned 4 – 5 star travelers we arrived at the Aitutaki Lagoon Resort with little expectation & were subsequently very pleasantly surprised.
We stayed in a Premium Beachfront Bungalow, the views were breathtakingly beautiful. Pictures do not do it justice. The resort was of a good 4 star standard, very clean, peaceful & although fully booked when we were there, no crowds and no noise on our side of the island. The hammocks & sun lounges were plentiful. The actual Bungalow was as new, spacious, spotless & nicely furnished, it had a gorgeous spacious deck comfortably accommodating 2 sun lounges, 2 chairs & a small table for two. My only criticism in relation to the bungalow is that there is no full length mirror & no tap outside the bungalow to wash sandy feet. The resort grounds are kept neat & tidy and although not a major factor for us, the landscaping was a little sparse. The lagoon views more than made up for the any deficiencies in the landscaping.
ACTIVITIES HUT – we were surprised at the amount & variety of complimentary items available. There are ample canoes, windsurfers etc all in very good condition. They even take care of the little things like complimentary reef shoes and floating sun beds. Frieda & Mata genuinely ever smiling, joyful and helpful individuals always ready render assistance.
FOOD & RESTAURANTS – The Flying Boat was our favorite purely due to its location and ambiance. Most of the food we consumed was at the resort & as foodies at heart would rate the food as "adequate – middle of the road type food", it is not the best or worst culinary experience one can have. The food was always fresh, portion sizes good to generous. We were in Aitutaki for 8 nights and felt that the variety was somewhat lacking & that the dining experience was getting a little monotonous. We also went to few restaurants outside the resort & it was a similar deal there. Menus or prices do not vary much anywhere one goes.
Breakfast is not elaborate but is adequate, if your stay exceeds a few days we recommend spending an extra few dollars every so often for an a la carte selection.
STAFF - mostly happy & friendly people although a few individuals look like they have been there for some time and look a little "over it". All in all not worth complaining about though. A big thank you to Esterelda - Restaurant Manger (forgive me if I have mispelt your name), your customer service is exemplary and worthy of a 5 star establishment.
The resort as a whole was lovely, yes there are a few minor niggly items as mentioned but overall not worth complaining about given a 4 star establishment. All thumbs up from us, the bad reviews are truly not justified, the previous review by the day tripper ERIN F even less so. A night at Ranginui's Budget Retreat costs less than a one hour massage at the Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & it should be respected that paying customers at the Lagoon Resort take priority over the numerous day visitors from other resorts/accommodations that conveniently take advantage of the facilities and location this resort has to offer.
Our spa rating below does not reflect the quality of the therapist, more so the facility which needs updating.
