Wife and I just got back from a couple weeks in FP. We have been to FP before, but not Huahine. We chose the Relais Mahana for its reported proximity to good snorkeling (true) and the desire to be able to get around the island on our own (with a rental car) without having to take a shuttle boat first, as you do with the Tiare and the motu resorts on Bora.

The Relais is on the far southern tip of Huahine Iti, and, as I say, if you want to explore and get around (and into Fare) without relying on excursion operators or whatever you will need to rent a car. There's a Europcar agency on site and it's reasonably affordable, not that you have a choice.

OTOH, there are worse places to be stuck than the Relais, which, I have to say, exceeded my expectations in every single way. We had a deluxe beach bungalow that was maybe ten feet from the water. The bungalow was clean and bigger than expected, with AC, a kettle to boil water for coffee, etc, a TV that probably never gets used, a telephone. You can get decent wifi via HotSpot, a ubiquitous FP wifi provider, that you have to pay for separately. I would recommend buying access yourself as the hotel does inflate the prices a bit.

There's a good-sized bathroom with a semi-outdoor shower that pools water on the floor (they always do!), and a separate toilet with an actual door for privacy (unlike the Hilton on Moorea...). We were near the end of the row on the quiet beach, and as previously noted, the snorkeling was excellent for its variety of sea life, including manta rays-yes, right off the beach in the late afternoon-and clownfish with anemones-lots of them. The water tended to be cloudy at different points of the day but that's a minor complaint in the scheme of things.

We were on the breakfast plan and found it to be basic but good- mostly bread and cheese, plus a pancake maker (you make them yourself) and the usual assortment of juices and fruits, etc. Nothing special, but it was well-provisioned and well-maintained. We took the rest of our meals elsewhere so I cannot speak to the restaurant, except to say that for vegetarians you probably will want to talk to the kitchen about coming up with meals as the menu is all meat and fish.

During the earlier parts of the day people are coming and going and the beach gets kind of busy, but we were out most days until mid-to-late afternoon and by the time we got back we usually had the beach to ourselves and a few other people. Often times in the late afternoon you can be the only people in the water, where the setting sun, mountain backdrop and far-off views of Raiatea and Tahaa, and even Bora Bora, are simply stunning. This is what FP is all about!

The staff at Relais, particularly Montanya (SP?), are OUTSTANDING. I simply cannot say enough good things about these folks, and I mean everyone. Other resorts could learn a lot from these people, and I want to make it clear that, despite what others have said in earlier reviews about French snootiness or whatever, it is ABSOLUTELY not an issue at this resort. All the guests are treated with the same degree of kindness and respect, and they all go out of their way to help you do whatever it takes to get the most out of your stay.

I've said it before in other reviews: the world is a big place, and in general we don't go back to places we've stayed before. But I would make an exception for Huahine in general and the Relais Mahana in particular. I am selfish enough to be happy that people tend to go to Bora and Moorea and that's it for their FP visit; it keeps places like Huahine and the Relias Mahana special, and the Relais Mahan is indeed very, very special.

Room Tip: Spring for deluxe beach bungalows. It's what you are going to FP for...

Between the tranquil exotic beauty of the island of Huahine and the exceptional location and reception Relais Mahana offers its guests, it would be be hard to imagine a better vacation destination. Monette and her staff left no stone unturned in their efforts to make us feel extremely welcome and at home, our stay forever memorable. They provide super easy access to organized tours of the island, or rental cars and bicycles for venturing further afield. And then, you get to come home to your comfortable air-conditioned bungalow on a pristine beach overlooking the sailboats anchored in Avea Bay, snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding, the tasty bar offerings and delicious fresh food in the restaurant. Who could ask for anything more?

Ia Orana; Good morning Tania,

Thank you for your nice message

Your company at the hotel was very nice to us and we thank you also
Since your visit, a decorator came to refresh and give new colors to the restaurant and at the reception! Turquoise blue as the lagoon!

Maybe we'll see you again one day and it will be a pleasure!
Have a good day,

We stayed at Relais Mahana for two nights in a Deluxe Beach Bungalow. We had direct access to the lagoon and the beach, so I would recommend this bungalow type for a perfect stay. Our room had a semi outdoor shower and private veranda. We enjoyed snorkelling in front of our bungalow and used the paddle board several times, which is amazing! The food is excellent, as the chef has just returned from Paris with new recipe's (yum!). We also kayakked to the motu, which is quite far! But a great experience, just take enough time (and sunscreen) to go there. the people at Relais Mahana are great and superfriendly. Try the new catamarans for a few days at sea! Go to Relais Mahana, it is worth it!

Huahine is a beautiful island and Relais Mahana is the place to stay on the island. Bungalows right on the beach and amazing sunsets. Monette and the staff are wonderful and extremely helpful. Arranged transportation from the airport and arranged a rental car for the day. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food and service was great. I would recommend this resort to anyone, especially those that prefer a more relaxing and island environment. Sure beats the big resorts on Papeete, Moorea and Bora Bora! Also, my kids had a great time and loved it. Paddleboards, kayaks, powerboat, great swimming and snorkeling beach. We will be back!

Room Tip: beach bungalows are the way to go.

Very nice, clean and large bungalows with all the comfort and great service. Private beach of this Hotel is the best of the island and its restaurant had reasonable prices and the best views. Perfect for a romantic sunset diner! Hotel offered free stand up paddle, kayaks and snorkeling equipment so it was easy to enjoy the beautiful surrounding coral. We rented a car from this Hotel and drove around getting to know more of the unique and wild beauty of Huahine. We also did the shark feeding watching experience while we were here and it was the highlight of our trip! Loved it!
