“Hotel sucks. Better yet, skip the whole island.”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

Our whole experience was not good. We stayed in May 2014 in an overwater bungalow. The air conditioning was inadequate. When it was windy, the bungalow leaked so bad it was like having a hot fan blowing over the bed. The shower didn't work properly, and make sure you don't get the water in your mouth. Take bottled water. This hotel only provides the first bottle free. Not like most places that provide 1-2 bottles daily. The maid service was poor, rehanging dirty towels that were on the floor. We borrowed the outrigger canoe and realized that both canoes were broken and do not paddle. When we reported that both canoes were broken (the outriggers were loose on both canoes), management said it was because we were white. The food was mediocre and service was slow. The only way to the hotel is by boat. It's supposed to have a schedule but make sure you tell the front desk what time you want to go because the boat will leave early if the driver thinks no one else is going at that time. We used the laundry service, as we have done at many other hotels, but we were not advised of the cost. $6-10 for each piece. Needless to say, we were shocked to get our bill. We asked to see the manager. We were told she would come out 5 minutes after the boat left for town, the boat which was taking guests to town to catch the flight back to Tahiti. The whole island can be toured in 4 hours or so including a lunch stop. The island was beautiful but not much more than Moorea or Tahiti. The locals are rude, the service at the restaurants is extremely slow and there isn't much to do.

Room Tip: The hotel had very few guests. Ask for a free upgrade to an overwater bungalow. There were bee hives...

How do we book this hotel?
I've been trying to book a room for end of September (in 4 months) but no success.
There is no official website and all other commercial sites (agoda, Booking, Expedia) are showing no availability for any day during the year. I even tried for October, November or December... Nothing. Is it hotel still opened or just a temporary problem? Or maybe they enjoy a full occupancy all year long.

To my delight I discovered a special island in French Polynesia - Huahine. It is tucked away from crowds with the usual rat race that ensues. It is an untouched treasure. The Royal Huahine was a refreshing experience of old Polynesia. I stayed in a deep overwater bungalow. It was spacious with comfortable beds and a large bathroom with a jacuzzi. Outside was a covered deck and an open one with a ladder descending to water level. One could comfortably slip into the water and re-emerge to a fresh water shower convenient for washing off salt water. The snorkeling was great - plenty of fish and other ocean dwellers. We used the kayaks different days, played ping pong and swam in the pool. All meals were very good. The personnel were friendly Vaya, Raena, Felicity, and especially Arieta who made my visit special.

Overall, the experience was exceptional. I plan to return. It is a well kept secret but I don't think for very long. I have traveled all over the world to all seven continents and this is a special paradise.

We spent 3 nights in this hotel and were a little bit scared seeing some negative reviews on this website.
We loved our stay at the Te Tiare / Royal Huahine.
We had an overwater bungalow and, although you could see that the hotel is a little bit old, the bungalow was huge and perfectly clean, with a very big bathroom with shower and bathtub.
The bungalow has a huge terrace with one covered part and one open part, and a private small deck to the sea, and a shower for when you exit.
The place in itself is amazing, in the middle of nature surrounded by mountains, lots of trees and a very nice and well maintained garden. Lots of birds in there, you really feel in the middle of paradise (which was maybe helped by the fact that there were just very few clients in the hotel).
The sunset is amazing from the rooms, and there is a nice beach.
The staff is very nice and friendly and the food was good. We loved the breakfast buffet. One day as there were not enough people staying at the hotel (I think 4 rooms were occupied), the buffet was not open but the lady brought us plenty of food and everything we asked for.

Overall we felt in a small paradise on Huahine island.
There were for us 2 things that need a change (apart from the hotel being a little old):
First is the boat shuttle service to the town. The hotel is very isolated and you can basically go to town just by boat. There are some free transfer every hour to town, but some are free and some are not. Basically, the transfers you would need to use to eat in the small town of Fare are not free: the last one in the morning was I think at 10am, and the last one in the afternoon back from town was 3.30pm. You could get other ones but you have to pay. It's a little bit silly for such a nice but isolated hotel.
Second is the wifi which is only around reception and is not free.

Anyway if you want a nice relaxing time in Huahine with an amazing view, it's a perfect place.

The Royal Huahine is a calm and lovely tropical retreat from the throngs of tourists on the other Society islands. We had a deep overwater bungalow - a few steps right into the lagoon - snorkeling several times each day with a fresh water shower right at the deck. The place is being lovingly resorted under new ownership and has lovely gardens with birds and flowers. Bungalows are spacious - clean, large bathrooms, comfortable beds. You can sit in the shade on one covered deck or in the sun on the other, both with tables and chairs. We used the kayaks and played ping-pong several times - easy paddling in the lagoon. For snorkelers, lots of lovely fish and other sea creatures. Gorgeous ocean views and sunsets with turquoise and green contrasting waters and surf at the outer lagoon. We took a half day tour with Poe Island Tours - first rate with explanations of the myths, legends, and sights of the Huahine islands (Nui and Iti) and some of the best preserved ruins of the ancient native peoples. We ate all dinners and breakfasts and one lunch at the resort. Food was varied and uniformly good. The employees are gracious and hard-working, with Arieta at the helm and Vaya, Felicity, and Raena all doing everything possible to make our trip enjoyable. If you want the flavor of Old Polynesia with modern amenities, come here. For now, it's a well-kept secret but not for long!

Room Tip: Get a deep overwater bungalow. Buy some groceries in Fare and store them in the little frig. in you...

The rooms are large, but the air conditioners are too small for the rooms. The place needs a complete redo. It is shabby to say the least. There is not enough staff to take care of the grounds or bungalows. The pool always looked like it needed a good cleaning. The restaurant was not good. The breakfast was good, but after that it was down hill. Tasted like food from a microwave. Just not worth the time or the price, until someone takes over that cares about making it a first class resort. Owners seem too interested in a bottom line, that is going lower and lower.

I was getting worried about this hotel because of some of the negative reviews on here. However, we had a wonderful experience here and found this to be a very special place. We were in an overwater bungalow and while it is a little dated it was extremely clean and spacious. I was particularly impressed with the size of the deck. We faced the sunset and it was very serene and calm.

The grounds are very well cared for and the pool and beach are lovely. Unfortunately we were only there for a day and a half of our 17 day trip to 4 islands in French Polynesia. It rained very hard on and off for the full day we were there, but we had the hotel boat drop us into town and we wandered around the few shops that were there and went into the grocery store. We also bought an amazing baguette sandwich from the blue "roulotte" (food truck) at the far end of town.

When we arrived there was a lovely bottle of wine from our travel agent Custom Tahiti. A very nice touch (they did a great job organizing the trip for us).

The first day we were there, there were only a few other people at the hotel - there was only one other couple at dinner. The second night, we seemed to be the only people at the hotel which was alternately very cool and a little creepy. We certainly had great service and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Since there were so few people at the hotel, they didn't open the buffet for breakfast, but brought us a big selection of pastries, fruit and made whatever we wanted (eggs, eggs benedict, pancakes...whatever). We ate dinner there twice and enjoyed both meals - I had fish one night and my husband had the pasta.

This place is definitely off the beaten path and a bit quirky, but it has a serenity to it that was very non-commercial and different than the rest of French Polynesia.

I really hope that more people discover this beautiful paradise.

Room Tip: Definitely worth getting an overwater bungalow.
