Sometimes you have to trust your inital "gut" feel as we parked at Camping Nelson. This was not for us! The cabin we had was "average" to say it mildly. Very small, no fan or air con. People hanging out in front of the cabin drinking beer and smoking got knows what...(with all the respect not my cup of tea). The walls of the cabin were paper thin we found out very quick. On our left and right side people snorred like there was no tomorrow. Do not underestimate the stray dog and ckickens (and there are 1000's on the island) who keep you up all night with their barks!! In the middle of the night my wife changed the room for our rental car to get some sleep!! The communal kitchen was average...2 huge freezers to strore your food. The location is great yes..rigth at the beach but it comes at price.

Room Tip: Tip, Kaveka on Cooks Bay has clean nice cabins (with thick walls!) for a very reasonable price!

Well, what more to say than location! After successful hitching to Camping Nelson (free trip around half the island) we immediately jumped into the lagoon, after all it is literally 5m from the accommodation. white sand beach narrow, but very nice, walk along sandy beach, wont spend much time in accomm. anyway, just swimming and snorkelling all day. Whale snorkelling tour definitely a must-do! Were snorkelling with 6 humpbackwhales, and it was the best experience ever! Need to be lucky, too, but you are picked up just a 5 minute walk from the camping, along the beach.
camping also possible, but we didnt want to leave our valuables in the hot tent, that´s why we opted for double room.
Kitchen big, but dirty, grocery store nearby (10 min walk).Busses very unreliable, hitching more difficult than on Tahiti and Bora.

Room Tip: double rooms in off season 4000xpf per room per night

I disagree with the comments below, in my opinion the kitched wasn't so dirty. The place is very cheap (only 15 euros per night! unbelievable for French Polynesia, probably the cheapest place in the country), the location is great, fresh and beautiful; there is a supermarket very close.
The toilets are pretty clean; the only thing I might complain is the small space to put your things in the shared bungalow (but after all, who cares? it's more space than in a tend), and the walls eccessively thin, which let you easily get woken up by party people coming back from a club in the middle of the night.

It's the best place if you have to pass through French Polynesia and you don't want to risk to finish your money: you can relax, swim, see sharks and any kind of animal in the sea, and settle down for a while before coming back to Tahiti.

PS go to the supermarket early in the morning, there's no much food left if you go after 10:00 am

We were grateful to find a cheap place to stay in such a beautiful location, but we were surprised at the poor hygiene in the communal kitchen. Cats have free rein of the place, and it doesn't smell very good. The communal toilets/showers were clean, however.

The camping is in the beach, so the location is good, but this is the only thing that is good. The owner is a very disgusting woman, always seems angry. The rooms ara very poor equiped: a very old bed, two plastic chairs and a litlle shelf. The amenities, room and kitchen are sooooo dirty!!!! It's impossible to cook anything in this kitchen, all the dishes are full of insects and the extractor hood is... indescribable!!!! So even the price is low compared with others, if you really want to enjoy your stay, don't go there!!!

The owner (Josiane) is the most antipathetic women I have ever seen in our 10 months trip.
She really don't care about you just your money. I know Polynesia is expensive but for the price we payed for a bungalow, it's incredible. You have only 4 walls of plywood without charm, a shared bathroom that is washed (every month?) and a disgusting kitchen. I've been to poor countries like Nepal or Lao but even there they don't have prehistoric tableware and they try to clean from time to time.
The only positive points are the good snorkelling spot and some good restaurant in the neighbourhood.
At you own risk, but never ever again for us.

Tahiti is a mighty expensive place, so i could only stay in backpackers on Moorea. They are not easy to find. I would recommend booking your first night in advance.
Well the Fare hut is , of course , quite spartan, problems with mosquitos and insects at night. Simple bed and facilities , but in a beautiful Tahitian style Fare hut. You must take a clockwise "Le Truck" from the port to Camping Nelson, going there is no problem because the Truck waits for the ferries, but more problematic on the return journey, finding the bus stop and finding the next truck is in 1 hour. There is good kitchen and facilities with plenty of restaurants around, a must is to try the "Poisson Cru". Of course Tahiti and Moorea are expensive places !
Also i took a boat journey with an ad hoc guide, wow WAS that dangerous ! But exciting, being surrounded by huge rays and small sharks, swimming in deep deep water takes your breath away.
Yes camping Nelson is a good option for backpackers in one of the world's most expensive places, reserve at least 1 day in advance
