Dr. Poole's Dolphin and Whale Tour
Reviewed November 5, 2013

My husband and I were honeymooning in Moorea in early October of 2013 and were recommended to take this tour by a colleague. I contacted Dr. Poole months before to confirm a tour date, however it's not necessary to do this. He was extremely courteous and was quick to reply to all of my questions.

Almost immediately upon taking off from the dock, Dr. Poole spotted humpback whales - a mother and her calf. He gave brief explanation and tutorial. He then told willing participants that due to the good conditions, we'd be able to swim with the whales. We were thrilled! We quickly put on our gear and got in the water. Soon enough - we were swimming only a few feet away from the whales! We watched as the mother breached from the water as we were snorkeling. There were many other moments where we were all in awe.

It was an exhilarating experience and I highly recommend it. We spent one week in Moorea at the Hilton and one week in Bora Bora at the Four Seasons and this was BY FAR our best experience... truly incredible.

One note - make sure to bring a change of clothes, snacks and water as our tour lasted 4 hours and we were cold, hungry and thirsty after being in the water.

Why this isn't the #1 attraction in Moorea, I don't know.

After reading the numerous reviews about Dr. Poole's educational tour, we contacted him via email. Yes, his website curiously does not list an email address or phone number but its available here or if you Google him: dwwe@mail.pf

Dr. Poole is fluent in French and English. He takes the time to educate in both languages and to spend time with each person on the boat. I watched him sit down next to everyone and ask about their lives and shared some of his. It really made the tour special and outside the ordinary. He took care to include the child who was onboard and made sure he was involved as well.

We were able to observe a humpback whale and calf, spinner dolphins and learned a great deal about marine mammalian behavior. Because of his engaging personality, it was so much more than a dry lecture. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this tour and his work. The cost is really nominal for what you get (and in comparison to other tours on the island) and helps support his work.

This should be at the top of everyone's list of things to do while in Moorea.

Our morning spent with Dr. Poole was so interesting, not only did we get to see 5 humpback whales breaching the water but we also spent 3 hours learning so much about the whales and their behaviour, it was a bit like being inside a NatGeo documentary with the answers to all of your questions on hand!

Dr. Poole has such a passion for these whales, the research into them and their well-being and it really adds something to this experience. On this occasion we weren't able to swim with the whales as another group had dived down and scared them away rather than observing from the surface, but the group prior to us did swim with a mother and a calf.

This is also extremely good value for money - and cheaper than an ATV or jetski tour, how does that work?!

Excellent experience - highly recommended!

My wife and I were staying at the Hilton Moorea last week and after reading reviews on trip advisor we decided to book a tour with Dr.Poole. As some people have said its a little tough to find contact info for him but it's there(dwwe@mail.pf). You also have to pay cash (xpf) the day of, no credit card, no PayPal etc. regardless, We had a great time exploring outside the reef in Moorea. We were able to see spinner dolphins and humpback whales. Obviously he can not promise any of this and even if we didn't see any wildlife I think we still would of enjoyed our time since Dr.Poole and his staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. You can tell he loves what he does. Make sure to bring your snorkeling gear with you, if the opportunity presents itself he will let you swim with the whales, unfortunately the whales we saw were constantly on the move so they never went into a state of rest which is needed to be able to swim with them. All in all we really did enjoy ourselves and if we are ever lucky enough to get back to Moorea we will be contacting Dr.Poole.
