“Standing in the midst of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2013

A truly wonderful spot.

Lots of history...a replica of Captain Cook's fort has been built on the site of Cook's original, the old lighthouse and for me the most touching..a plaque to commemorate the departure point for the mutinous crew of HMS Bounty on their journey to Pitcairn Island. Now there's a story....
All that right next to a beautiful black sand beech and wonderful place to swim.
Idyllic!

“Stunning Black Sand. Mild Surf. Breath-taking Views.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

This is one of the prettiest beaches I have ever been to. When I say pretty - I mean natural beauty. There is no development here - just sand and ocean.

The sand is a beautiful metallic looking brown-black, creating a wonderful visual contrast against the blue sea.

The day we were there, the waves were mild - perfect for cooling off while sun-bathing.

From here, you can see Moorea in the distance, across the Sea of the Moon.

There is a paved lot with free parking a few yards away.

“Just an abandon light house”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2013

Nothing special about this point. The light house was locked up and nothing around it to explain anything about it's history or reason to the island. Just behind point is a "local beach" and was neat to chat with some local in a non dinner/hotel setting.

“Not much!!!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Point Venus is okay at best-----the lighthouse at the site and watching the surfers are more interesting. Nice park with facilities. The actual sigificance of where Capt Cook watched Venus traverse the sun is really not much of an attraction

“Underwhelming”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

We had a bit of a hard time finding it -- the signs for the turnoff aren't that prominent. It's a nice beach area, but not any nicer than you'll find on the rest of Tahiti. We took a few pictures of the monuments, but really there wasn't much there in terms of historical significance. If you're doing a circle tour, might as well stop, but otherwise, you could safely skip it.
