Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost (CGC), an RV park and campground which includes a historic bucket line gold dredge listed as a National Historic Site, is located in the center of the small, wilderness community of Chicken Alaska. In addition to the 70 sites (20 or 30 amp) which have picnic tables and fire rings, there is a water fill-up station, dump station and clean showers. CGC also provides cabins and rooms with various combinations of single to king beds. There is a restaurant, serving home made entries, wood-fired pizza, beer and wine, and an espresso bar serving fine Alaska roasted coffee, smoothies/frosts and hand-dipped ice cream. CGC also offers an excellent gift store and gallery showcasing Alaska and Yukon native art & crafts as well as Chicken-themed items, a wide selection of jewelry, pottery, clothing, hand-made knives, ulus, prints and original paintings, collectables, etc. Daily tours of the Pedro dredge and the accompanying historical gold mining display are provided. CGC has also been one of the few places in Alaska to offer recreational gold mining (from gold panning to suction dredging), including equipment rentals and free instruction. Gold panning and free lessons are offered on location at stand up troughs. FREE WiFi is provided throughout the park, on the decks and in the restaurant. FREE firewood is included with camping. Kayak rentals are available for use on the nearby Fortymile Wild & Scenic River.

“It is worth the trip”

Now here is a place that has it all, great food, wonderful people and GOLD. Yes you can be taught how to pan for gold by one of the great local characters who pan yearly for gold on this area.If you travel to or from Dawson City on the Top Of The World Highway Chicken is a special place. We stayed overnight in the campground and walked around the old machines that dot he village site. There is a great little place that serves up excellent fresh baked pie and a cold drink.

“Panning in trough is a rip off”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2012

For 15 bucks you cain pan for gold all day in their trough but only using their junky pans which make you lose more gold than you find. I would suggest going downtown where you can pan with any pan you have or rent their junky pans and wash in Chicken Creek. We did both places and prefer Downtown Chicken.

Chicken Gold Camp charges $8 for 4 hrs or $15 for 24 hrs of panning pay dirt provided from our mine site. Customers can use their own pans or we can provide pans for no extra charge. We also provide access to 100s of acres on our mining claims for panning from the stream for $15 day. Panning at our "troughs" in the campground yields gold in almost every pan.

“Fun stop over”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2012

We were on a road trip from Fairbanks to Dawson City, Yukon and our driver was an ancient man (in his 80s) who ate junk food all the time. Made me wonder why I was on a diet. We stopped at Chicken. There are a lot of mining camp stuff about. Chicken serves the area I guess. A restaurant whose main dish is Chicken, a wonderful gift shop selling lots of things to do with Chicken. A wacky place with friendly people, They had home made desserts in the Restaurant - that looked good - but I was on that diet. Wonderful out houses.
The nicest thing was the sale items - lots of stuff for $5 - like T shirts - off course with Chicken on them.
If your on that road there's no where else to go, but if you are planning a trip I would recommend going to Chicken.

“you absolutely must visit Chicken, Ak. Stop & relax for a while”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2011

Eat at the restaurant, buy souvenirs, talk to other travelers, relax and enjoy the weather, watch for animals, be sure to go to the postoffice. Sit on the large porch and do nothing but watch traffic go by. Look at the stars at night . It was great just to know you had to relax and take it easy because there was no place to go and not much to do. No time tables, no schedules--just peace and quiet.Forget the phone or TV.
