“Absolutely first rate”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2014

I've lived in Alaska for almost 40 years and spent the first 20 of them traveling in the "bush". Bettles is exceptional in providing a very pampered experience in a very remote location.

Hazel and Jaime run a tight ship that is all about guest comfort. If you want to experience the "real" Alaska it does not get more comfortable than this. The facility in the Old Lodge is on it's last legs but if you want ambience you can still stay there (on occasion). We opted for the newer Aurora Lodge which for many will be as rustic as they want to get. It's also more authentic since most places in Alaska now look like this not the old lodge. It's basic, shared baths which were always impeccably clean (we're in the building maintenance business), basic but good food (with a staff always willing to adjust and accommodate requests). The Arctic gear saves you hundreds in special equipment purchase and the lights....well...unless you live for weeks/months/years in the Far North this is as good as it gets.

Weather is highly variable and light displays are not on demand but if your going to place a bet on seeing them your best one is Bettles. Our three nights had three very different displays, good, better and best but the staff are on it and if there are lights you'll know about them and get several options for viewing.

Many will be content to walk out the Lodge door and see them. A walk of a hundred feet or two onto the runway improves them and a different perspective is out to take the 3 mile trip to the viewing cabin which,on the night we decided to go there, was the best display of our stay.

Wright Air Service and the staff at Bettles Lodge really are the best in my (considerable) experience. This is not a place for whiners. Its brutal weather in a remote location where the staff will make you as comfortable as possible but it's still a remote location in an extreme climate. If you're idea of "wilderness" is a hotel without room-service don't go. If you want an authentic Alaska experience with generous and hospitable staff the best place in North America to see Northern Lights is Bettles Lodge.

Room Tip: I thought we needed a private bath. We didn't and neither will you unless you have exceptional n...

Bettles is an untouched village, totally away from the hectic busy city life. It is a place where everything returns to basics, simplicity.

For 3 consecutive winters, I tried to catch the Lights. I failed to catch any on the first two trips. Then I found out about Bettles Lodge and I decided to give it a shot. Bingo! I not only caught the Lights, I saw the Lights on every single night of my stay there.
If you are looking to catch the Northern Lights, Bettles Lodge is the place to choose. If you visit at the correct month, the probability of catching the Lights are so high.

The Lodge staff are great and friendly. They will do what they can to make you feel at home. And the food is fantastic. I would have food critics interview the chef on the marvelicious food. The lodge may be small but it is so cozy and homey. The lodge doggies make great guest relations officers too!!

Come to Bettles Lodge to stay a few nights to get away from the stressful, fast-paced concrete jungle. Get recharged and regain your sanity. You will like it.

Room Tip: The lodge is small but cozy & homey. If you can, go for the Jacuzzi room where it comes with a p...

Just returned from a two night stay at Bettles Lodge. It was an incredible trip. The lights did not disappoint. The first night they began to shine when we had just finished dinner. Very intense green and red. The staff started a fire and set out s'mores while all the cameras clicked away. The next night was even more spectacular. They danced for hours making wonderful displays.

The lodge staff and pets are very, very friendly, making us all feel at home. The accommodations were very comfortable and the food was both hearty and delicious. The scenery, snowshoeing, dog sledding and cross country skiing filled every day with fun.

The only caveat is keep in mind this is a wilderness lodge in a village of twenty people. Don't expect the Ritz. Do expect the experience of a lifetime and warm hospitality. I can't wait to go back.

Hard to say what was the best part. Roger cooked some outstanding meals. Amela was ever present and sweet, caring for us like we were family. Sevi and his dog team gave me renewed hope in youth and the best ride of my life. Hazel kept it all running and so much fun. We had one of the most memorable New Years Eve parties ever around a blazing bonfire complete with fireworks as the Northern Lights dazzled and danced overhead. We just left and I'm ready to go back.

We went for a family trip to see the Northern Lights, which were fantastic as described by other reviewers. however, there is so much more at the lodge. We felt as if we were amongst friends the entire time. As it was winter, we were in the modular hotel, which is very homey, conducive to relaxing and sports, and warm and comfortable. The boys had a triple room with a bathroom down the hall (but there are plenty of toilet facilities so that no one has to wait) and I had a bathroom in the suite which was a luxury. The food was fantastic even for my picky eaters and the people who run the lodge made sure that we were properly equipped (including things like mittens, gators, boots) for the various activities we pursued that included: cross country skiing, sled dog mushing, snow mobiling/machining, trekking, etc. We had an excellent family adventure and learned a lot about the culture and natural features of the Alaskan interior.

Room Tip: If you are on your honeymoon or a couples trip, splurge for the in room bathroom (Jacuzzi tub room...

We have just returned from a weeks stay in Alaska including Bettles Lodge. We went for the viewing of the Northern Lights and had amazing sights. It is a fantastic wilderness Alaskan experience! We found the staff very experienced and helpful in planning our activities. Thanks to goalaskatours who helped us arranging the stay.

This is a historic Lodge located in a remote, fly in area of Alaska. Given that fact this Lodge is a delightful place to kick back and relax or utilize as a starting point for a remote Alaska adventure. Yes the bath is down the hall - no big deal. A bathroom with running water in bush Alaska is something to be grateful for. Lunch and dinner were excellent, but once again it's bush Alaska so don't be surprised by the prices. My burger was $15 & chicken dinner $25. The staff were friendly, bed was comfy and the setting beautiful. What more could I ask for?? A few less mosquitoes (don't forget your bug dope)
