Joe Jo's, like every place on Tobacco Caye, is very low key. We happened to meet one of the managers (David) as we were getting on the water taxi out to the island- but we were primarily greeted and shown around by his grandson (9 year's old). Mind you- I'm not complaining. Unlike some of the places on the island, they have snorkling gear, kayaks and even some nice stand-up paddleboards... all included. The rooms- are nice, clean, simple. hot water only if the sun is shining (which is mostly wasn't for us). Joe Jo's is in the lee of the wind- so, it was a little calmer and quieter on that side of the island. The lagoon between the island and the reef is only a foot or three deep, so you cannot really swim out in front of your rooms. But it's a short walk down to Reef's end for some truly spectacular snorkeling. Our room (the honeymoon suite)- is the same size as the other cottages, but the back porch was over-water. While it doesn't seem like much of a big deal, it's semi-private between the mangrove bushes and if you watch carefully, there is an abundance of life to view just below the porch. Baby reef fish galore- sargent majors, trumpet fish, damsels, grunts, many other small varieties, crabs, a few small lobster, a big porcupine fish. And- at night, the glow worms lit up the shoal like fireflies. quite an experience.

The sandy area around Joe Jo's was well raked and cleaned, and Carmen provided us three meals a day in the dining room. Food was pretty good too.

We absolutely loved our stay at Joe Jo's! We felt like we were family during our stay on the island. They are so accommodating and friendly. Our trip was wonderful and anything we wanted to do or needed, it happened! Wonderful food from Carmen, Cynthia was just wonderful and took care of so many things, Dave was helpful in every way! We loved roaming the island, snorkeling, Scuba, and everything the island had to offer. We can't wait to plan our next trip!

Room tip: All the cabins have wonderful views

This was a trip to remember! We were in a cabin on the lagoon, identified as the
"honeymoon suite". It was just the right size for the occasion. I got rid of my shoes almost immediately, still can't find them. The staff was the best!!! The meals were to die for! Ms. Carmen just could not miss with any of the food she, and her daughter prepared... We swam, splashed and drank our favorite cocktails. We had the pleasure of the owners arriving later the day we arrived, and it was like one big happy family gathering.. They were as much into having fun and enjoying the experience as much as us. I have so many great things to say about this visit.. I am ready to go back today if I had the opportunity. It was THE BEST TIME, EVER!

Room tip: Ask for a view of the reef.

We had a cabin overlooking the lagoon, mangroves and the reef. It was spotless when we arrived, clean sheets and comfy beds! The front porch to each of the stand-alone cabins have 2 deck chairs (either plastic or wooden muskoka-type) and a hammock. Inside the cabin had a single and a double bed, a tall floor fan, a chair, a table, and a bookshelf (we used it for clothes), as well as some hooks on the wall for hanging clothes. Each cabin also has a private 3-piece bathroom that was nice and clean, with shower. Meals are included, three/day, served at 8am, noon and 6:30pm, and you are summoned by a bell for mealtime. Carmen (chef) cooked up incredible meals! Mealtime is social, with various guests sitting together family-style. Fresh food, plentiful and cooked so well!! Our days were spent snorkelling on the reef (incredible), kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, swimming off the dock, relaxing on the verandah of the main lodge, and visiting with other guests (all the equipment is free to use). David and Carmen and their family took great care of the guests, and the property is well-maintained. In fact, it's the best-maintained lodge on the island, in my opinion! During the summer, the young grandsons also kept the guests' children entertained playing together ... although sometimes were a little bothersome (peeking into cabins windows, banging on the cabin walls, underneath the cabin banging on the floor...). The journey out to the caye was a bit rough in the rainy weather, but the captain took good care of us. On the way back to the mainland, it was smooth sailing and rather a pleasant 30 minute journey. There is a small epi-bar at the other end of the island that was open a few hours a day that sold chips, snacks, pop and beer, but other bars are open in high season. It was a really great experience to visit Tobacco Caye - rustic, but lovely. Hope to travel there again!

Room tip: Any of the cabins are wonderful

Joe Jo’s is for sure the best place on the island. Everything is taken care of for you because life is simple here. The snorkeling is fantastic and my kids loved the family atmosphere thanks to Dave and his grandkids. We are already planning a return trip.
