We greatly enjoyed our 3 night stay at Joe Jo's. The property was very peaceful and relaxing, and provided an excellent vacation escape. Carmen's cooking was really good, and she made a few meals with fresh fish. Meals included items such as fish/chicken, refried beans, homemade tortillas, fry jacks, eggs, fruit, homemade muffins/breads, and dessert. Hot tea and coffee were available at breakfast. The use of paddleboards, snorkeling gear, and kayaks is included in your stay free of charge. The property is located on the southeast side of the island, behind the reef. The waves crash onto the reef on this side of the island, and for me the sounds of the surf helped me to sleep deeply in the ocean view cabin.
A stay at this property is best suited for those looking for some quiet relaxation. If you enjoy a high volume of social interaction, noise, or late night crowds, or if you require being stimulated by electronic devices (TV, smart phone, etc) every minute of the day, you would be happier staying in San Pedro/Ambergris Caye. There isn't a lot to do on Tobacco Caye, but that's exactly what I was looking for. We took out the kayaks one day, snorkeled every day right off the south shore of the caye, sunbathed on the deck provided by Joe Jo's, napped in the hammock on the front porch of the cabin, and played board games at the bar at the adjacent lodge. There are two bars on the Caye which are open to all visitors, providing drinks, beer, smoothies, and snacks. However, Carmen's meal portions were more than sufficient and I did not feel hungry outside of meal times. Wifi is provided free of charge and the signal is best in front of the office at the lodge or in the dining hall.
