When I tell people about my fantastic trip to Belize, I always start with our experience at the Tobacco Caye.

This is a very small rustic island with very friendly people and FANTASTIC diving and fishing.

The couple at Gaviota resort made us feel right at home the second we got off the boat.

If you really want to recharge your batteries, this is the place for you.

If you're the 5 star resort, all inclusive, Disney resort type traveler, this might not be the best option for you.

After a long trip through central America we were looking for a relaxing place on a pristine , natural island and found this to 100 % on Tobacco caye at Gaviota´s . It´s not only the place which is great , just on the seaside with superb views from the balcony , also the couple running this nice place , Judy and Dean , made our stay an unvorgettable one. Food is excellent value fort he price you pay ( don´t forget , you are on a small island ) and sometimes topped with a nice cake or seafood . They also have a volleyball area within and it is great fun to enjoy a game in the afternoon with the locals . Great expirience and you get excellent value for the money you pay . We defenately shall come again .

The island is very tiny to the point of being a bit claustrophobic. There's a lot of trash laying about. Your options for food are limited to wherever you're staying, as the island is too tiny to have a market of any sort. If you try out one place and dislike it, you could try another, but the island is so small that everyone will know you left one place for another, and it'll kind of be a big deal.

At Gaviota we didn't have running water for the first couple days. The electricity (which we used to run an oscillating fan) was turned off early on, and the cabin we were in did not get an ocean breeze. The food was lackluster. One day we were served hamburgers full of maggots.

We traveled Belize for a month and Tobacco / Gaviota was the anti-highlight of the entire trip.

Food was delicious, local fresh fish and conch were part of the list. One night they even surprised me with a Birthday cake after dinner! We just think sometimes quantity wasnt enough to all guests apetite.Capt Firmin and all staff were very friendly and we felt at home at Gaviota.Hope to return there sometime.

The Gaviota and the whole island of Tobacco Caye was fantastic. Captin Fermin, who runs the Gaviota, is a great source of information on the surrounding waters. The Gaviota cabanas were basic, but comfortable. They built a new cabana over the water and it has a great breeze running through it. The food was also good and the girls that worked in the kitchen were super sweet. Matthew, the British guy who works at the Marine Research Center was great and he has loads of knowledge about the marine life in the area. Erik and many of the other guys that work for Captin Fermin were great and professional and fun to hang out with. I'd recommend renting a boat and captin for a day and heading out to snorkle along the reef. Both bars on the island are fun and inexpensive. Dangriga isn't wildly exciting, but it is not as bad as the other reviewer made it seem.

I went out to the island with my guide, Jes Karper, of Conservation Adventure Tours (conservationadventuretours.com). He was great and also a great source of knowledge on the marine life and ecology of Belize. He's very professional, a good deal, and will make the trip whatever you want it to be.
