weather was not good, but made the best of it, place was as basic as you get. George and Kevin at Great Reef Inn bar were great hosts, don't expect much because there is not much there but reef and more reef, just hope for good weather

My wife and I arrived on Jan 7th 2011 and what we arrived to was such a disappointment . From a distance, it looked like total piece of paradise.

The ride from Dangriga in the skiff was nice and calm, it took about 45 minutes, no complaints there.

So here we go, Marta, the Manager met my husband and I at the dock, which was pretty cool and took us into the office and then showed us our room, it was very rustic and very dirty.

No hot water and the smell in the bathroom of our cabin was not very pleasant to say the least.

Tobacco Caye Lodge advertises canoes and snorkel gear, however, we were informed that the canoes were not in any shape to take out into the water and when we went to go rent our snorkel gear, the shop was closed!

One thing they do not tell you on the web site is that entire island is made up of residential of locals that don't care about their environment and a few so called resorts, which are made up of small dirty cabins and shacks.

When you take a look at Tabaco Caye Lodge on the website, they only show you the good and not the bad and ugly.

There is no beach to lay on and the tourist that are here are laying on the dock where the boats and skiffs arrive to drop off the unsuspecting tourist.

When you walk around the island, which takes only less than 10 minutes, you notice cigarette butts and glass on the sand, you also notice a local not too far from the dock, he had a skiff full of beautiful and colorful conch, taking them for their meat and then dumping the shells in a pile, see picture.

There are literally thousands of conch shells everywhere on this tiny little island as well as garbage that is strewn all over the island from the locals, which is very surprising to see.

The bottom line is here, these people don't care!

This is with no exaggeration, the entire island if full of dead and lifeless and pillaged conch shells, one has to wonder how it took to create this beautiful creature that was taken from the ocean.

And on another note: We were informed that this evening for dinner, which is communal, we will be served "fish balls with rice and beans". How unimaginative.

Everyone that stays at Tobacco Caye Lodge eats at the same time, breakfast is at 8am, lunch at noon and dinner at 6pm. They ring a "cattle bell" so we can come running into the hall for dinner. Not what we expected on a so called tropical Island!

To our surprise, we were stunned when we heard one of the dinner options was macaroni and cheese.

We have travelled for the last month and a half through out Costa Rica and Belize, and we both have to say that this is not a place to vacation.

This review is our opinion and is true to form.

PLEASE NOTE: the pictures that you will see attached to this review is in front of shabby cabin 3 in the back no less and through out the island.

As the saying goes: it's not all as advertised!

The island itself is great in terms of snorkeling and other sea activities but the actual island was kind of trashy. Dumps of broken bottles, appliances and conk shells and busted up half finished buildings everywhere. For such a small island there was a lot of abandoned building projects and broken things.

If you encounter bad weather as I did, there is nothing to do here except drink and read, which all hit their breaking points.

The hotel itself was cute on the outside but left a lot to be desired on the inside, showers were icky and water barely flowed from them. The toilet was a joke and I know this was a result from the way plumbing is done with rain water. The beds were lumpy and electricity only came on after 3 or 4pm.

The meals were the highlight, Melissa is a godess with conk and other sea life and prepared some truly great meals.

Another note, the owner also tried to scam us our 1st night by making us pay $185 Belize for a water taxi out to the island (we were 60 minutes late for our arranged time due to our bus breaking down enroute and missed our prescheduled departure). I had to forcefully say no at which point he said he would take us on the 40 minute ride to the island. I guess the thought of being out $90 USD for 1 night changed his mind.

All in all, I probably would look for another island when I go back to Belize.

agree with most - did some extensive searches for a caye/island experience with off shore snorkelling - i got slammed by the expensive prices for shabby digs all around -heck i have been to the maldives which is as pristine as it gets with exclusive water bungalows deserving the 400 use/night-then i came across tc lodge-frentically i emailed barbara and co -who were ever so quick to respond -yeepee uncle buck motorboat right from dangriga -40 mins later paradise-yeah cabins adequate clean not flashy but added to the robinson crusoe vibe-
barbara and co ever so accommodating with the ' no problem' approach-snorkelling off shore DEVIL RAYS - boat trips to nearby cayes-no commercialisation - and what a price-get there before it changes

Went to TCL for about a week. Of my 3 months in Belize, my only regret is not staying at this beautiful place for longer. It is one of about 3-5 hotels on a 5 acre island. We left our window open at night and could hear the ocean. I'd wake up and look out to see the sun and the waves. Couldn't have asked for anything more serene, peaceful, beautiful. The cabins have balconies (where we spent much time reading), but they do not hang over the water as some others do - but it really didn't make a difference, the ocean is a mere ten steps away. There is a small bar right beside the water, fun but not rowdy at night. Dock is great day or night. During day, it is lively. People fishing for baracuda, swimming, tanning. Locals caught fish with hands, cool to see. During night, it is romantic. Perfect view of stars. Grab a Belikan at the bar and stroll down the dock. Rooms are basic. Had no complaints. Food was AMAZING. There are no restaurants, so you eat what is served with the rest of the people staying there (special accomodations available - I don't eat seafood (which is served frequently, especially conch), so they made chicken for me). Was a lot of fun getting to know people during meals from Scotland, Guatemala, England, USA (all over course of just a week). Went snorkelling with a local - canoed off shore, around island, swam back with canoe in hand. Saw guide catch fish with hand. The kind of tour you can't get from a company. Amazing. Owner was great - friendly, social, kind.

Room Tip: All rooms are great. The cabins are in two's - two cabins attached, I think there were 5 total...

My wife and I stayed at Tobacco caye lodge for 5 nights in May. We loved it. If you are looking to chill out and relax, this is the place. Great snorkeling from shore with lots to see. Also one of the best scuba dives of my trip from this island. The staff was wonderful at Tobacco caye. Thank you to April and Kevin for all their work. They made the trip fun. The location is incredible, tiny little island in the middle of a reef. Huts on the sand overlooking the water, facing the side of the island that gets a nice breeze during the evening. Great little outdoor bar to sit and watch the sunset. I would recommend this place.

My husband & I arrived a few days before our reservations. Barbara and crew were wonderful. They even baked a cake on our unexpected early arrival for my husbands b-day.
Tobacco Caye Lodge is on a great location to snorkel and scuba dive the reef. You are literally on the outer reef. The owner and staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. While the lodge is by no means luxurious, spartan but clean it is exactly what we wanted for r&r and no shoes for 3 days. Life doesn't slow down much more than this. If you want a Hilton or Four Seasons, go ahead. We can't wait to return to Belize and Tobacco Caye Lodge.
