If what you're looking for is a quiet low key trip away this is the place to go. We stayed 4 nights which was a nice amount of time. The rooms are basic but really it's fine for what you need. You spend most of your time on the hammocks anyway. The food is fantastic! You certainly won't go hungry. The staff are extremely friendly and you'll be sad to leave them. It does advertise hot water but we rarely got any. It really didn't matter as it's so hot you don't mind a cold shower!

We missed the boat out to the Caye by 5 minutes to receive a call at our hotel (how did they know where we were?!) in Dangriga saying the owner, Barbara, had sent the captain back for us so we didn't have to pay charter price. This out-of-the-way service was the first of many highlights of both the lodge and the island itself.

Basic but comfortable and clean cabins, 3 excellent meals per day, good quality snorkeling gear available to use for free, the list of positives goes on. At US$55 per night per person that includes all meals, and you are looking at one of the best value stays in probably the whole of Belize.

Tobacco Caye itself, while very small, is quite populated for an island of that size, but where other people have moaned about this, instead have a look at where you are, the people you can meet, the things you can see underwater (bath water is not this clear!), and you will have yourself an awesome stay.

And lastly, take a look up when the stars come out. There are no words to describe the night sky.

Al and Stu, Scotland.

I visited Tobacco Caye Lodge with my husband and young adult niece and we all had a wonderful time. Once I got off the dock, I didn't wear shoes for the rest of our 4 night stay and that was just fine with me. Its not the Ritz, but its damn near perfect.
There's snorkeling in crystal clear water right off the caye. The best is around Reef's End. I loved that I could snorkel, read a book in a hammock or have a cool drink at my whim. AC took us on the boat to snorkel in three beautiful spots, each a bit different, where we saw lots of fish, large and small, and colorful coral and plant life.
The nightlife was just my style. Drumming one night, tales and riddles in the bar, checkers on the picnic table and huge stars in the sky that came all the way down to the water.
The entire staff - Barbara, Kirk, April and Rhoda - was great. Captain Buck found me a safe place to leave my vehicle in Dangriga. Get to know George while you are there, he's a sweetheart. Most of the locals and other guests (who were from all over the world) had good tips and interesting stories to tell.
For those who need to communicate with the outside world, get a BTL chip for your unlocked cell phone or there is limited internet at the Marine Station at Gaviota's.

My travel buddy and I are generally budget-oriented, and having spent no more than $10/night per person on the first half of our Belize trip, we were a little unsure about spending $55/night per person at Tobacco Caye Lodge. The island looked pretty enough, and the Lodge was the only place with rooms available, so we splurged.

It was worth every last penny. You can't beat the location, obviously - Tobacco Caye has its own merits separate from the Lodge - but the Lodge is definitely the most attractive place on the island (Tobacco Caye Paradise also looks nice). The other spots just don't look as well maintained. The home-cooked meals are delicious (included in price - as opposed to Reef's End, where they're an add-on to the room price), the rooms are clean, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. You can borrow canoes and some limited amount of snorkeling gear for free, if available.

I'm talking about tobacco Caye Lodge, of course. The boat trip to the island was a wee bit bumpy but Captain Buck had us tucked in under a big tarpaulin so we stayed nice and dry ( and so did our luggage). Barbara, the owner, was at the dock to meet us and our bags were whisked off to our cabin in a wheelbarrow (the only wheeled transport on the island!).

Our cabin was clean, spacious and had a nice big veranda facing East so that the rising sun greeted us every morning, glinting off the crystal clear sea. The cabins aren't fancy but they're adequate and considering the cost, which includes all meals, is fantastic value for money. Palm trees everywhere with hammocks strung from them and a canoe for our use a few yards away on the beach. And always the sound of the waves crashing on to the sheltering reef. At night when the generator is turned off after 10pm there is virtually zero light pollution and the star gazing is something special.

I made use of the canoe and went out with a local boatman to fish off the reef with my little travel rod. Caught 4 strong fish which we ate that night and hooked another one which set off at high speed in the direction of Cuba and is probably still going. There are fishing trips and snorkelling trips at remarkably low prices in fast, stable boats that only charge $20 an hour per person, and we caught lots of barracuda, snappers, pargo etc.

There are wooden docks all around the island with comfy chairs on them so that you can admire the sunset whilst sipping something cool. We saw eagle rays and stingrays lazily flapping by in the clear water, and on one dock there was an osprey's nest with young.

My wife found quiet spots to practise her yoga and I enjoyed the snorkelling straight off the beach. Even non-swimmers can snorkel here as the first bit is very shallow.

Our first dinner was lobster thermidor and this set the standard for the rest of our stay. Usually the anglers amongst us pooled our catch and the brilliant cook served it up in a variety of imaginative ways; always ultra fresh, of course, and always delicious. And I'm not normally a fish eater! The kitchen staff would always check first to make sure you weren't served anything you didn't like. As others have said, the bell rings to announce meal time but on a couple of occasions I was out on a fishing trip and got back late and missed the bell. No problem, they always had a meal ready for me when I got back.

When the sad time came for us to leave there was Barbara and some of the lovely staff to say farewell at the dock and we both had lumps in our throats as the boat left this little spot of paradise behind.

Two of our groupcan't swim and were still able to snorkel inside the reef and loved it.
The meals were always fresh and tasty and all staff pleasant and helpful and the bar at the beach a pleasant place to unwind even further and meet people off sailboats or passing fishermen.
I cant wait to go back!!!
