We stayed at Casa Laurin for 3 nights at the end of our 15 day vacation. We were a family of 4 (2 adults, with a 10 & 2 year old).
About the owner -
Firstly about Ginette, the owner, we cannot say enough how extremely helpful she was to us. If it were not for Ginette and her dedication to assisting her guests, our trip wouldn't have gone as smoothly as it did.
We rented a car through the managers of a house we rented for the first 7 days of our visit. We rented through TriColor car rentals. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the rental agency, they would not accept our credit card b/c the numbers were printed vertically on the card. When we offered another card, this too was not acceptable because the numbers were not raised. So we took a cab to the house rental.
Later, we found out that TriColor, though we did not rent a car from them, HAD successfully put a $1500 hold on our credit card. We managed to get around w/o a car for the first few days, but we were going to need a car for the rest of the trip. So we called Ginette to see if she could assist.
And assist she did. She found an agency who would accept our card, with a fair price for a rental and they delivered it to the house we rented. She spent so much time calling around to different places and then calling us back with information and more questions. She also called Tricolor to ensure that the hold would be dropped ASAP.
We were so amazed at all the effort she put in on our behalf. We were only staying with her a fraction of our entire trip and she had done so much for us. We were so grateful because in the end, we did get a car and were able to continue our trip around CR as planned.
The house -
The B&B is currently located in a really cute block of Escazu. You can walk around the neighborhood quite easily - most of the streets have side walks. Around the corner, there is a Walmart, which many people might find convenient. Also, there are numerous restaurants nearby. Finally, within less than a minute, you can be on the highway. We got to the airport within 15-20 minutes. From her house, we also visited the Irazu volcano - that drive took about 50 minutes. Cartago is about 45 minutes to an hour away. Just a great location.
The B&B itself is wonderfully set up. We reserved the "early riser" room, which is nearer to the garage. I believe it is called early riser because it is also nearer to the kitchen and as a B&B, she does make wonderful breakfasts and is up herself quite early. We were not awaken by her activity however.
I believe most of the rooms have a private (or nearly private) outdoor patio. We were able to store food in a guest's refrigerator. She offered her kitchen to us in case we needed to re-heat any food or do any cooking.
The breakfasts she made were quite filling and delicious. We started off with coffee and fruit. Plenty was given for our family. She asks ahead of time what kinds of food you might like and so daily, we were treated to an assortment of wonderful meals and fresh juice.
Again, we were traveling with children and so it was important for us to be in a place where we could stretch out a little. There is plenty of common space. There are games for the children, puzzles etc. My children felt completely comfortable and at home walking around, choosing a spot and sitting to read or play.
We watch our children fairly closely and that is important since she does have a pool. Because it is a home with corners and twists, parents should be prepared to be up and about with small children so that they can monitor them.
Ginette is most always around the house working on something - helping a client who will arrive soon, making plans for meals etc. She was always approachable and always ready with ideas or suggestions for places to eat or visit.
While we were made to feel like we were at a relative's home, Ginette does run her business as a business and so expect full customer service as no other. Towels are changed daily, rooms are neatened and refreshed, receipts are given etc.
So make no mistakes, you are in a home that is a business run with customer service that could only be perfected as Ginette has over the years she has been doing this.
We HIGHLY recommend a stay at Casa Laurin. As we are back in the States confronted with snow, all we can do is reminisce on our time in Costa Rica. A great journey and a great stay at Casa Laurin to wrap up our adventure.
