This is a very classy, elegant restaurant with wonderful food. As far as we are concerned there is none better in San Jose. It is pricey, but well worth it. Good wine list and delicious desserts!

The ambience of this restaurant is matchless in San Jose and a rather a shocking stand out in a town that can be a bit dingy and down at the heels. Taking up most of the ground floor of the beautiful Vickie style hotel, central courtyard with the bar along one side and tables under the porticos on the others. Beautifully appointed and subtley lit but with a warm, tropical comfort. The food was well conceived, prepared and plated though I found the stuffed conejo just a bit dry. Don't pass on the desserts. Their coffee cream pie is justly famous...two layers of mocha flavored pastry cream, light over dark over a chocolate crumb crust. The wine list offered an excellent selection of South American as well as European labels. Wine prices were a bit higher than in the states. Service warm and attentive but not too. Three adult, a bottle of wine and dessert was $145.

I've had the good fortune of dining at the Restaurante Grano de Oro on several trips to San Jose, Costa Rica. Tucked into a former coffee plantation, the hotel is small, but extremely elegant, decorated with luxurious persian rugs, hardwoods and accented with photos of Old San Jose.

The restaurant makes up a good portion of the lower floor, complete with a gorgeous open air courtyard, and a very intimate, elegant format with large booths and well appointed tables. The menu is diverse, and a mix of Latin with fine Continental foods. The menu boosts everything from staples like steaks, lamb and fresh fish to rarer menu specials like rabbit. All are prepared with rich, french-style sauces. The restaurant is perfect for business meetings or a romantic night out, and the prices are surprisingly affordable for the quality.

Lastly, the wine list contains some real gems -- including some rare carmeneres from south american that are unbelievably tasty. Enjoy!
