I stayed in room #6 at Casa 69 for the last two weeks of November 2018. This was my second visit to San Jose and Casa 69 - that should tell you something right there about my first visit; I had a great time. This time however, I had some trepidation as I'd heard that there had been a recent ownership change.
I needn't have worried. The hotel is largely the same as it was before. The main strengths remain - the perfect location, the rooftop lookout, the cafe table and chairs outside my room, the healthy breakfast, and the friendly and helpful staff. My room was clean and comfortable and thanks to the time of year, I was nice and warm during the day and nice and cool at night.
Without a doubt, there are issues though ... the nightclub next door does get noisy on the weekends, and the damn train runs right by the hotel every day starting very early and uncannily sounds a long blast of its horn every single time as it passes right by. As an extra bonus during this stay, there was a renovation going on next door so I was treated to the dulcet tones of a screaming tile saw every day, including Sunday, from 8AM to 8PM. I swear, that must have been the hardest working tile cutter I ever heard.
Thing is, there is nothing that the staff can do about the above issues, so there is no point sweating it. If there is an issue and they can do something however, they do it, and they do it with a smile on their face and a friendly demeanor. In my room, the safe didn't work - they fixed it. The fridge was broken - they replaced it. The TV remote didn't work - I didn't really need a TV remote anyway so no problem. Thing is, I kept a smile on my face, I didn't sweat the small stuff and I had another great time at Casa 69. I have another trip planned to San Jose in 7 months, and I'll definitely be staying again at Casa 69.
