It was so good to be back!

Review of Hotel Casa 69
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jan 19, 2019via mobile
I came back to Casa 69 after 3 years. It was like a well oiled machine. Everyone was so nice to me, it was clean and they gave me an upgrade! Whenever I stay in San Jose, this will be the place I go sin duda! You are never far from anything.

A clean very friendly hotel centrally located. Beware the early morning train noise. Bed was firm, almost hard, but I was getting used to it. No air conditioning, but good air flow and ceiling fan. Quaint and a little rustic. Good food at Irish pub next door and near Nat. Museum. Again, beware early train noise.

Highly recommended. Excellent hotel, very nice attitude (special thanks to Alma). Possibility to arrange tours & get assistance. Affordable price, good location (walk to city center takes 10-15 min). Restaurants & bars & supermarkets around the corner.

I was aware of the train noise from other reviews but didn’t realise the track was literally on the road (not a separate track) and honking starts at 4am on weekdays. It sounds like the trains are going to come through the wall. The Irish bar over the road is really loud at night as well.

The hotel is close to Barrio Escalante but we got Ubers at night so could have stayed elsewhere in the end.

The rooms are big, with ample storage space. Huge king size bed which was comfortable. When we checked in the bed smelt like a man had slept in it and the sheets were stained. They did change them when we asked though. Owners speak good English.

Breakfast is continental style and ample but for $5 you can add a hot option.

The train noise alone would be enough to put me off staying again even though the hotel itself is fair for the price paid (bedsheets aside, the rest of it was clean). Luckily we had jet lag so weren’t too badly affected but this is not a hotel for a goods night’s sleep.

I stayed in room #6 at Casa 69 for the last two weeks of November 2018. This was my second visit to San Jose and Casa 69 - that should tell you something right there about my first visit; I had a great time. This time however, I had some trepidation as I'd heard that there had been a recent ownership change.
I needn't have worried. The hotel is largely the same as it was before. The main strengths remain - the perfect location, the rooftop lookout, the cafe table and chairs outside my room, the healthy breakfast, and the friendly and helpful staff. My room was clean and comfortable and thanks to the time of year, I was nice and warm during the day and nice and cool at night.
Without a doubt, there are issues though ... the nightclub next door does get noisy on the weekends, and the damn train runs right by the hotel every day starting very early and uncannily sounds a long blast of its horn every single time as it passes right by. As an extra bonus during this stay, there was a renovation going on next door so I was treated to the dulcet tones of a screaming tile saw every day, including Sunday, from 8AM to 8PM. I swear, that must have been the hardest working tile cutter I ever heard.
Thing is, there is nothing that the staff can do about the above issues, so there is no point sweating it. If there is an issue and they can do something however, they do it, and they do it with a smile on their face and a friendly demeanor. In my room, the safe didn't work - they fixed it. The fridge was broken - they replaced it. The TV remote didn't work - I didn't really need a TV remote anyway so no problem. Thing is, I kept a smile on my face, I didn't sweat the small stuff and I had another great time at Casa 69. I have another trip planned to San Jose in 7 months, and I'll definitely be staying again at Casa 69.

Room tip: Thanks to its unique layout, I don't think there's a bad room in the hotel.

My partner and I stayed for a mere 4 nights last month. Although Craic can get loud on Fridays, we dealt with it. The people were friendly and the breakfast was relaxing and nice. We were able to walk everywhere from Hotel Casa 69 for our various outings. Bonus for me was hearing the trains from my bed, and finally seeing one or two. Gracias!

Room tip: We were in room 11, which had the full wall of sound from Craic across the street.
