Casa 69 was a perfect place to stay in San Jose - we had one night here at the start of our trip and 2 at the end. There really doesn't seem to be much to see in the city, apart from a couple of decent museums and the theatre, and it's not particularly attractive, but this hotel was a peaceful place to come back to and relax. It's about 20 minutes walk from the centre and it felt quite safe to walk around the area although it was quiet at night and it's usually more reassuring when there's more people around. Our guidebook recommended a few restaurants locally but we didn't manage to find them - I would suggest getting recommendations from the very helpful owners instead!

The room was spacious, clean and bright; the bed was huge and very comfortable. We were on the opposite side of the street to the main hotel and there was keys/entry codes to get in and out, there was also a safe in the room which was handy. The owners and staff were great and very welcoming, happy to organise taxis for us and look after our luggage after we checked out. Breakfast was simple but great, fantastic crusty bread with tasty jams and fresh fruit, and there were other options available at additional cost. The only slight downside (and it's obviously not the hotel's fault) is the train line which is very close - the trains start quite early in the morning and as they share the road with cars they make a lot of noise with their horns! As we were on European time we were awake anyway but it would probably wake you up if you weren't a heavy sleeper.

If you want to stay in the city (and I would recommend doing so for at least one night just to have a look around, but spend as much time as you can exploring the rest of the country), then Casa 69 makes an excellent base.

This was the last place we stayed on our week long trip to Costa Rica and we could not have been luckier to have spent the last night here.
The accomodations were just GREAT !!! when I looked at the pictures on the website I was hoping that the room we got lived up to the picture... it exceded it...
The host ... Kurt was just so very kind and welcoming. He will always have a special place in my heart... I am not going to go on and on with alot of words to convince you to choose to stay here... I am only going to say this .......
" If you are looking for a 5 star place to stay that is not in a big hotel then your only choice in San Jose is Casa 69"'

The only heavy rain we experienced was in San Jose - the day before our departure. We went out to sightsee anyway knowing how pleasant our room waiting for us was. Large room. comfy beds, TV, great shower, internet...
If you don't mind a 10 minute walk from downtown through an interesting neighborhood, Casa 69 is perfect. My cab driver knew exactly where it was located.

I just got back from Costa Rica and spent the last night at Casa 69. It was really clean and comfortable and had all the American amenities. The bed was pretty great and I got a great night's sleep. The shower was also amazing. Kurt is a great owner and is really accomodating. Even though I forgot to secure my reservation ahead of time, Kurt honored his original price and welcomed us. That guy really knows customer service. He recommended some great places to eat in the neighborhood. Also, the breakfast at the hotel is good. I want to go back just for the mango juice. At any rate, this is a great place to be if you are passing through or staying in San Jose.

We originally planned to stay in San Jose for two nights at the beginning of our trip and a last night before our early flight out. After hearing MANY negative things about the city, we opted to head an hour southeast to Orosi for the first couple days and didn't regret at all the missed days in San Jose. Parts were nice. Most wasn't. Never met anyone but nice people, even with a 9 year old we felt relatively safe during the day. We ventured out at night (on a Sunday) but I wouldn't have gone anywhere near the downtown area. Even at 4:30 am on our way to the airport, there were a lot of sketchy people wandering through the downtown area. The city is dirty, crowded, hard to navigate, and what it lacks in charm is made up for in grafitti. Great bakeries, though! We didn't really explore it much, so that's just a drive-by opinion. It's a city, with good and bad, but when you have limited time in Costa Rica, spend it on the beach or in the rain forest. We did enjoy our stay at Casa 69. Kurt was very helpful as was his staff. We had a 6:00 am flight and he arranged for a reliable taxi (the only guy who ever stopped at a red light, even when there wer no cars at 4:30 am). The power went out for about 30 seconds in the evening, which killed the alarm clock. One of the staff politely knocked on our door about a half hour before our cab was due just to make sure we were awake. A very nice gesture at 4:00 am. Kurt recommended a restaurant that was open on Sunday that turned out to be very good. It's either called Mi Tierra or Nuestra Tierra, can't remember. Tipico food, and the chicken was outstanding and the strawberry milkshake great for my 9 year old. Staff at the restaurant was very pleasant and talkative. There's a little outdoor artisan mall not far from there with a lot of great souveniers and local crafts, plus a nice car park right next door. Yes Casa 69 is hard to find, but we did it on our own with a map and Kurt's directions. Everything in San Jose is hard to find. But Casa 69 was super safe, with keypad entry, locked doors and attentive staff. Internet access worked great and TV's had lots to choose from - a weird thing after 11 days in the rain forest without TV or internet! A couple side notes: we rented a car from Avis and it was very smooth. Picked up near the airport (not at the airport, costs you an extra %12 vs. an 8 dollar cab ride). Dropped off at the Crowne Plaza hotel, which all taxi drivers know. Only $300 for 10 days, and a little Nissan Sentra that got great gas mileage, and looked just like the average locals car, which makes you less of a theft target. We stayed at Orosi Lodge in Orosi and Pachamama Bungalow in Puerto Viejo, both of which I recommend. Would definitely revisit Casa 69 if I was back in San Jose.

We stayed at Casa 69 for one night before our trip to Puerto Viejo and two more nights upon our return to San Jose. Casa 69 is really a gem! The previous reviewers were all correct regarding the beautiful design and landscaping of this little hotel, the cleanliness of the rooms as well as the great service by the staff (especially Reinaldo and Edwin) and by Kurt and Michel.

Some people may be annoyed by the train noises that started at around 6:30 am but, in a tropical country, it is bright by 5 am and people start their day early. Breakfast was very good, we loved the jam! Cannot find such delicious jams in Canada! Each room has a convenient safe with programmable access code. We loved the beautiful fresh flowers and the charming old furniture of our room.

The area can be difficult to find for taxis but you can just tell taxis to drop you near the Embassy of Nicaragua and walk from from there (1 min). The area is very safe, we walked back to Casa 69 from downtown around midnight and felt very comfortable. It takes about 20-25 min to walk to the Central Market area. The neighbourhood has all the services (groceries stores, ATMs...) and there are also a few very good restaurants such as the Trocadero.

If you're gay, Kurt knows all about San Jose's nightlife and can recommend you all the gay places to go each night.
