“Truly the Cat's Meow in the Capital”
Reviewed April 7, 2012

My boyfriend and I liked this little spot so much we went back to San Jose for 3 nights during our month long trip. If you are an animal lover this is the hotel for you.
There are several house cats living at the hotel. They are very friendly and beautiful. We have 3 at home and really loved having them in the common areas.

Casa 69 has a very cheery home feel with Latin flair.
The rooftop terrace provides an exceptional view of the city and mountains. We loved getting take-out and watching the sunsets.

The Donna and her staff truly make you feel like family. From the minute we checked in we were warmly received. Donna has a heart of gold and she's more than happy to recommend restaurants, tours, shop or whatever else.
The rooms are spotless and comfortable. The staff is more than happy to help you get to the right bus stops, help arrange tours, really anything.
Everyone who works there cares about you and you can tell.

During the holiday weekend we slept in until 10. We realized breakfast stopped at 10 and were planning on getting some in town. When we walked into the dinning area they surprised us with a fully set table and had breakfast waiting for us. "We were going to make you leave without breakfast." we were told.
Later that day we were worried buses had stopped for the holiday. They called around for us and said that if anything didn't work out we could come back and they'd give us a free upgrade. Luckily we didn't have any trouble but it took the stress off.

Our first night at Casa 69 another guest, Shannon, made an incredible lasagna dinner for everyone. We had so much fun chatting with everyone around a family-style table. So fun! We were really fortunate to have friendly neighbors.

If you live in a city, like we do, you probably won't even notice the train. We slept like babies every night. The bars next door are also fun if you'd like to go out but don't want to venture too far. They are very nice to tourists even if your Spanish isn't great. There's also a Peruvian restaurant, and a pizza joint both around the block.

Pub Rock has a tasty menu of bar food $5 and under. The burritos were our fav'. They play music sometimes but it's never heavy base. We couldn't hear it inside our room, 6, at all.

Room Tip: It's about a 20-30min taxi ride in normal traffic from the airport. If you paid for your room o...

My family arrived late in the afternoon due to not being able to find Casa 69--even with GPS, we drove by it no less than five times. So, make sure you get the names of the bars located next door. The locals could not tell us where it was, even though we had them call (three times) and ask for landmarks. It was a learning experience. There is however a blue neon "69" sign outside the gate, which only shows at night.

When we entered, the front desk attendant could not locate our prepaid PayPal reservation (made 3 weeks earlier). He was a little miffed, there was a language barrier and I was questioning at what point I needed to become upset. The "ugly American," never had to come out. To my joy, Oscar, the evening attendant walked up and simply said, "no problem, I can fix!" It instantly calmed me.

Oscar is an integral part of the functioning of Casa 69. He does EVERYTHING with a consistent smile and an incredible willingness to please. Specifically speaking, I am not sure this venue could function without him. Although I met several other staff members--all pleasant and helpful--he was the stand-out representative.

I also met the new owner Donna. I would describe her as typical Canadian--friendly, open and accommodating. She took criticism extremely well. I liked her even more once I realized she was an animal lover/advocate.

My two suggestions:
1. Get the name/logo painted on the outside wall--enough to read from a distance.
2. I love the animal-friendly environment, but the cat urine odor in the garden needs to be addressed--maybe using a vinegar/water/mouthwash-based spray that would not harm the plants.

Overall, I loved this place and would highly recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Both rooms 6 and 8 were beautifully decorated nicely and beds were comfortable. Paying $10 for secur...

So it was noisy. Other than than, it was wonderful. Very cosy with just nine rooms, beautiful gardens, safe and secure, includes continental breakfast. You can also order a full breakfast for $5.00. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would give this hotel a 5star except for a few things. It is adjacent to the railroad tracks and there are two nightclubs on the same street.

We stayed at Casa 69 for 3 nights and were very impressed. The rooms were clean and well maintained. The bathroom was nice, lots of hot water, and good pressure. The bed was very comfortable.
We went to Limoncellos for dinner and the food was very good at a reasonable price.
The staff was very helpful and even gave us a discount for the restaurant. Everyone was pleasant and smiling, and we were happy to find that communication with the staff was not a problem.
Each morning we enjoyed the complementary Tropical Breakfast which includes fresh bread, fruits, jams, and a large carafe of coffee.
Overall our stay was very enjoyable and we would recommend Casa69 to anyone.

Casa 69, a Boutique Hotel/B&B, was our first stop in San Jose. Ralph, Lola and others were very hospitable and helpful. Our room was bright and clean; great coffee and fresh fruit for breakfast. Casa 69 is also located within comfortable walking distance of the National Museum, the National Theatre and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. In the downtown area Central Avenue becomes a very pleasant pedestrian mall several blocks long. Contrary to reviews suggesting that little time should be spent in San Jose, we found the city had much to offer. We spent five days in San Jose, 3 on arrival to Costa Rica and 2 prior to departure, and we were not at all disappointed.

Stayed there again for a pit stop on the way home on our last trip. The owner, Donna, was out of town but there were a couple new hires who took great care of us. Needed a 4am wake up call to get to the airport and we were pleasantly surprised with not only a wake up knock on our door but a fresh pot of coffee to send us on our way. The staff had also made arrangements with our prompt and professional driver, Juan, to pick us up at the crack of dawn. Great customer service! Internet available, television and close proximity tio restaurants and homey feel, we recommend Casa 69 in San Jose!

We've been staying at this B and B for four years now-have made three trips to San Jose-and it's definitely the best place to stay in terms of service and value. The staff for the most part are great, Ralph is amazing -friendly and helpful and will do everything he can to make sure you are comfortable and that your needs are met. Make sure to ask them to arrange your airport transportation, it's great to be picked up and not to have to worry about finding a cab-they will do this for $20.00. The rooms are always clean and comfortable-I recommend staying in the house across the street, it is private, quiet, safe and secure. The beds are amazing and are always great to return to after a couple of weeks on the beach. It's also handy to be in walking distance to downtown and to so many points of interest. I also love that this is a pet friendly hotel-my friend stayed with her large dog and was thrilled at how well he was received. Thanks so much for a great stay, we will be back!

Room Tip: I like the king sized rooms in the house across the street from the main house-quiet and private wit...
