My Husband and I stayed at the Hotel Colonial for 3 nights on our honeymoon. The first 2 nights and the last night. It is not far from the airport, about a $15 cab ride. Make sure you only get into cabs that are red/orange with the triangle, and even at that make sure that the triangles arn't badly painted on!! Just a hint. My Husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Colonial. We had room #10, the first one on the main floor. We enjoyed it, although not 5 star style, which you need to keep in mind that this is Costa Rica and the hotels are not the same as Mayan Riviera Hotels. You can find them, but not for $50 a night!! Our room had A/C. The room we had on our last leg of the trip wasn't as nice, no A/C, but it had a fan. Even with that, we were never too hot. They have a small pool, and it is refershing. The staff is very nice and helpful. They are located in a Safe area, we walked to downtown, the bank (Banco De Costa Rica - They have the best exchange rates!!!) and Mercado Central (shopping). There is a decent Argintinan resturant across the street. I do have to say that this wasn't the nicest hotel we stayed in during our stay, but it was satisfactory. We hardly spent any time at the hotel as we were out in the city exploring. If you are looking for a safe and secure place to spend a few nights in San Jose, this is the place. If we go back ( I am sure we will!!!) We will stay here again. As we walked around the other areas of the city where the so called "higher end hotels" were located, they were in much worse areas. Some of the previous reviews said it was not a safe area, well it was. You have to remember that what is considered Safe in Costa Rica is very different from North American standards. Overall, we would recommend this hotel. The breakfast is not bad, nothing special, but not bad.

We stayed in the standard room for two nights. The rates were great. The hotel is secured with a locked gate. It appears that it isn't in the safest part of San Jose as the hotel claims. It is a clean and simple hotel, no frills. We encountered a few problems however with this hotel. Our room had no A/C, only a fan, even though the website said it did. The front desk receptionist told us all the rooms had a fan but no A/C's. We were fortunate because it didn't get too hot in our room but it was stuffy. If we had known that there were no A/C's in the rooms we would not have stayed there. For breakfast, make sure you let the receptionist know you would like eggs and rice otherwise you won't get any. We had to find out from someone who had been there a while. But, for the price we paid, the breakfast was very nice. Finally, there is a parking problem if you decide to rent a car. They had one tiny garage with a narrow opening for our SUV. Beware when backing out! Needless to say, we probably won't be back to this hotel again.

We lived at the Hotel Colonial in San Jose on our first and last days in Costa Rica. The hotel is well-located and rooms are clean and comfortable. While our experience when we stayed there for the first day was pretty good, things were quite different when we returned for a second time. They assigned us a room without a window and without a phone, with a TV on the blink. When we asked for a room change, the only person who seemed to be working there at night abruptly and rudely told us that there was no other room available because they were crowded for the weekend. We had no option but to put up with it. The rates are okay, however, and they do have a decent breakfast that's included in the room rate.

The area around the hotel is a little seedy, however the hotel itself is safe and secured.
The larger room ( suite) is tastefully done with a lot of mahagony, however I recommend the standard room as it is off the street and the AC being the same size works better.
The staff is very helpful and even though I speak spanish I noticed that non-spanish speaking guests were helped as pleasantly as those of us who made an effort to speak the local language. Downtown San Jose is within 3 walking short blocks, and you can do all you want to do on foot. If you decide to visit the Sabana cemetary ( historically preserved), you take a bus off Avenida Centrale, ticket is about 21 cents (US). Taxis are clearly marked, all red, with a yellow triangle on the door. From airport it is $12 to downtown which is 20 kms away. Breakfast is included and standard Costa-Rican. Beans, rice and scrambled eggs as well as strong coffe, tea and UHT milk. We spent one week at the Colonial and would stay there again. Our stay being at the beginning of the rainy season allowed us to be Costa-Ricans staying at the hotel. It is a non-smoking building, no lift. So travel lightly. Costa-Rica does not have Standard saving time, so be aware that in late May, it gets light at 4:30 and night arrives around 5 PM.
