The road to this western gate requires a 4x4, but it's so worth it! The rangers are surprised more people don't come visit. That makes it great for hikers who want to avoid the crowds at the other Braulio entrances. We did the whole set of trails in a day. Such beautiful flora! And we actually saw a quetzal!!! The trails lead to two different lakes, one in the caldera of Volcan Bravo. It's a cloud forest, so dress for mist and light rain with layers for the cold. And fill up on fresh spring water from the ranger station!

I was there on december travelling from San Jose to Puerto viejo, do it during the day , never at night , no lights, lots of fog, lots of trucks, lanes switch from one to two lanes so often, lots of small motorcycles on your right and left , go with time and during the day time take your time , no retention barriers on the sides , deep canyons, lots of fog and rain on top of the mountain but doable. We didn't get to spend a ton of time in Braulio Carrillo, but we did get to drive through it on the way to the east coast and make some stops along the way. It was amazing to be driving through the rain forest and see how lush everything is. Along the route, there are a few places to pull off (beware the potholes) and take a look out into the valleys and hills of the forest.

We drove through the national park via route 32 on our way to Selva Verde and the Sarapiqui River from San Jose, the scenery as you drive through the mountains is stunning, on the way back we stopped at the Atlantic Aerial Tram (part of our tour). The Aerial Tram is an interesting way to spend an hour or so high in the canopy of the rainforest, we did't see many animals though.

This is a nice national park that's not too far from San Jose that will allow you to experience the rainforest with good hiking trails.
