“fabulous parque!”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

this was my second visit to braulio carrillo, accompanied by an local guide who knows this national parque well. the road trip from heredia is always exciting on the narrow and winding mountain roads. once in the park, the paths are nice yet not too manicured. often i feel like i'm trekking through virgin territory. a good chance to see active mixed flocks of both pacific and caribbean birds. the ranger station is a nice place to enjoy lunch and look at the pictures of birds and other animals sighted within the area. crossing the road to visit the other half of the parque can be an adventure in and of itself, but this side must not be missed. plan to spend the day. always a great place to begin my journeys in one of my most favorite countries.

“Drive thru on tour coach”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

In the dry season a drive through on a tour coach is not particularly interesting. There were no waterfalls, because it had not been raining. The road is good.

“Tapir tracks and fork-tailed kites”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Fantastic day trip from Heredia, up past the sleepy village and fantastic local restaurant in the village of Sacramento. Taxi stops here as the road is then unpassable. The food was excellent here, had a hearty meal both ways! The walk from Sacramento to the Barva section entrance to the park is great for bird watching, and not too taxing, about 30-40 minutes. The entrance fee is only 6 USD, and the ranger was knowledgable and friendly, and gave handouts for footprints, bird list and a map of the trails. The rest is up to you. Especially exciting are the tapir, whose track are abundant at every muddy turn. The summit to Barva takes another hour and a half or so, depending...the view is ok, alive with birds and very, very green, of course. Flowers abound as do the hummingbirds. A pair of fork-tailed kites graced the crater. Other trails led to a viewpoint back down the valley and also to a volcanic wetland, also great for birds. Came here twice, both times saw more wildlife. I was virtually alone bar a few Costa Rican walkers out for a Sunday hike. Simple and satisfying experence.

“volcanic rainforest”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

If you are near, this Parque is a must: Stroll through the rainforest canopy; early mornings are super for both budding and experienced bird watchers (and listeners).
