I hiked to the ruins from Paraiso, but you can also take a local bus to within a mile of the site, so it's relatively easy to visit. I found the grounds quiet, well maintained, and with plenty of space to have a picnic or let your child play at the playground.

If you're interested in architecture or just Costa Rican history, I recommend you check out the ruins.

We had the opportunity to see the Ruins at Ujarras as part of the Orosi Valley Tour that we took. The ruins are set in a park like environment and we were there during the week on a Thursday and it was very peaceful and tranquil since only our group of 9 were there.

The Ruins are basically what is left of the Mission without a roof, doors or windows, and there is sign that gives you the history of the site.

The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception was constructed in the middle of the 16th century and it was destructed by flooding and earthquakes. Only some ruins can be seen today, but they make for a nice and quick stop while in Lake Cachi area.

The legend says that the church was built on top of a box found by a fisherman. The place where the box was found is marked by a tiny stone cross. The box contained a painting of Virgin Mary and nobody could it move from the ground. The church was famous for its bell tower. The bell would start tolling and warning the people in the area about floods or pirate attacks. It is said that the church bell was tolling for a long time in 1666 right before Morgan's pirates attacked the area. The Round windows were used as look-outs to warn the residents of any eminent dangers.

Try and pick a time between Jan and March as it can rain and be quite dreary although beautiful during the rainy seasons.
