“Great place to get through San Jose”
Reviewed February 8, 2012

This hostel was great. They give you a towel and have a hot shower. Don't forget to get your free shot when you arrive! The owner Brain is a really cool dude and has a bunch of stories he'll share with you. Make sure to drink at the bar downstairs and try their pineapple moonshine. The staff was very friendly but not very informative (I guess though there really isn't much in San Jose to do anyway).

My friend and I stayed here for two nights and had a blast! Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Definitely the most bang for your buck in San Jose!

If you're a true traveler, you'll love the vibe at Galileo Hostel. Definitely one of the best hostels in San Jose, Costa Rica. The ownership and staff were very hospitable, hilarious, helpful, and outgoing. The rates are super affordable and the location is optimal--close to the airport, downtown, park, and Pan-Am highway. Stores and services are near. Plus, they have the coolest bar and best drink deals in San Jose with plasma screens, satellite sports and video games. The overall atmosphere is fun and international. Any itinerary into San Jose should start and end with stay at Galileo--it's the perfect place to launch into your adventures in Costa Rica.

I really enjoyed my stay. I definitely recommend the Galileo to any adventurous travelers!

Not to mention, Rocky and the Rugged Pineapple.

Room Tip: Dorms are great fun and affordable, but a private room is just a few dollars more...

We booked here for one night as we were transiting through San Jose. The location was a very convenient public bus ride from the Transnica bus station (no need to take a cab, the public bus is inexpensive, quick, and very easy!). Upon arrival we were checked in efficiently by a staff member who, as other reviews have reported, was a bit rude and edgy. This is something that we tried to ignore, since our stay was a short one. The hostel itself is not perfectly clean, but we found the beds to be comfortable and the kitchen well maintained. The rooms are upstairs from the common areas, and we found the rooms stayed pretty quiet despite the bar downstairs. The bar was well stocked, and we were pleased to see a local microbrew on tap. The premises make up a very funky decor, and the hostel is certainly designed for a young, laid back crowd. There are dorm beds offered here for $9-- at this price range, you can't expect things to be perfect.

I just needed somewhere to stay overnight in San Jose before catching an early morning bus, so I wasn't too picky for one night, but I probably should have been. So so gross. The title of this review says it all.

Room Tip: Stay at another hostel

We made San Jose our last stop just to have a place to stay before our flight out to the States the next morning. When we arrived in the evening, we knew at first glance that we didn't want to stay there. However, since it was cheap and late at night, we decided to just stay since it was only for a few hours.

Was it the worst experience of our WHOLE trip in Costa Rica. Once we stepped in, the people who stayed there and the employees look like they were on something that made their eyes all glazed. The whole hostel looked dirty from the bathrooms to the computers to the beds. We didn't even want to sleep there so we attempted to stay up. However, failed to do so. We ended up sleeping for 2-3 hours, got up right away, and zoomed out of the place. We didn't bother getting ready there since the bathrooms looked disgusting. Instead, we got ready at the airport bathroom.

What turned me off the most was some of the employees were extremely RUDE. All of them are kids from USA which was odd. One kept ragging on where we live (NYC) and another accused my friend of hitting on one of her coworkers. It was bizarre. I would not recommend staying there. All throughout Costa Rica we stayed at hostels and this was the worst. In fact, I've stayed at plenty in Europe and Japan, and this is definitely at the BOTTOM of the list.
