Gaudy's Backpacker Hostel

Spent two nights in Gaudy's, once on the 1st and the next on the 4th. It was a tale of 2 stays, really. The first one was less than great. Our room was a private room with a large double bed and a single bed. The sheets were clean at first, but by later in the night the single bed was covered in a bunch of small ants. Further, some form of giant black bug crawled up onto my travel partner while sleeping that night. The bathroom door was not really a door and the toilet paper dispenser didn't work. The walls were also paper thin...we were talking just above a whisper in a private room and it disturbed the person next to us.

However, the second night was a totally different stay. It was in a private room that wasn't directly attached to another room. The bathroom had a door this time, which was a big plus, though the shower doors were busted. No bug problems either and the bed was definitely bigger. The staff were really helpful the entire time and gladly stored some bags for us while we travelled to Manuel Antonio for two days. While we didn't use them very much, the common areas were spacious and received a lot of light and air. They also helped by calling a reliable driver to take us to the airport, even at 4:30am.

We were coming from a non desirable hostel so we were just happy this place was more decent.
There wernt many beds for the dorm we wanted so we got stuck for the first night in the one that doesnt have a window. Did not had a good sleep there coz it reeked of old shoe/sock smell and the futon was so used that it was so soft and saggy. The sheets felt unclean as well.
They transferred us to the dorm upstairs and that was wayyyyyy better coz it has a shared bathroom inside the room and it has alot more space.

(+)
High ceilings in the living room makes the space feel bigger
TV with english channels in the living room
Bfast was nice
Lots of toilets and bathrooms

We chose Gaudy's based on the website stating the provide parking, the front desk help made NO effort to rearrange cars so we could park onsite and referred us to a public parking garage 2 blocks away that effectively DOUBLED the cost of our stay as parking was $32.00 for overnight parking!! This was our second time staying here, on our first stay the parking was open upon our walk around the building.
The beds were unbearable as we could feel the metal bars thru the mattress.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs, the beds are much more comfortable, and it's less noisy from the road traffic.

San Jose is a noisy city in a country with a noisy culture, so I come to Gaudy's because it is located in a quiet neighborhood. It is spacious with sitting areas, pool table, games, internet computers and free wireless internet. I gave my taxi the directions shown on their website and he came straight to the location, no problem. A large grocery store is within 3 blocks that has a reasonably priced cafeteria inside. There is a local market (pulperia) nearby also. I paid $20 for a single bed with a comfortable mattress, and I slept good. Breakfast is included. They have a book swap and the lady on staff was helpful giving me directions to a nearby business center where I can download and print some copies. The main highway where this is located is two blocks away and has plenty of local and chain restaurants and an AM/PM, similar to a 7 Eleven. If you like seafood, I recommend the La Princesa de Marina a quick taxi ride away. Also close by is the huge Sabana park, and there is a nice Natural History museum called La Salle. Many buses pass by on Paseo Colon the main highway only two blocks away. If you want quiet and a good night's sleep I recommend Gaudy's

The location is a bit off from the main road, a few minutes walk. However, I found this to be a plus. When you actually want to get some sleep, you don't have to contend with the sounds of people and traffic like you do with hostels placed on main boulevards. Within 10 minutes walk, there is a Subway, McDonalds, La Sabana Park and the National Stadium among other things. The staff at this hostel is nice and helpful. They have a map on the wall and didn't hesitate, on several occasions, to spend time showing me how to get to places. Showers are warm. Not hot, but warm. There's a large tv in the common area with a bunch of DVDs. Breakfast and wifi are included.

I arrived at 10 and was quickly checked in and shown to my dorm. Quiet, better-than-average mattresses, reasonably dark for sleeping. I found warm water in the shower. Yay! I was able to sleep until 9am, so maybe its location in seemingly a residential neighborhood is a plus in that regard.

The drawbacks: It's a bit hard to find. Even my traveler partner, who'd been there before just two weeks earlier, had trouble locating the hostel. And the computers are ancient and ridiculously slow. (But there are computers available for those who need them.) Only two bathrooms for probably 20 people.

We stayed in Gaudys backpackers for 4 days and it was a really good find. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and attentive. It's a great place to meet people and swop stories. We booked a double private ensuite and got a lovely big room. It's a pretty good location for access to the park, the national stadium and the city all within easy walking distance. I would recommend staying in Gaudys for both solo travellers, couples and groups. If I had to highlight one weak point it would be that the computers need a software update to keep them up to a travellers requirement(they are a little slow), but against this the wifi is pretty good if you have your own computer/iPad/I touch etc.
