Aurelia and her staff are so wonderful. She planned my whole vacation for me and we had an absolute blast! Whenever I am in Costa Rica I will always go to stay there.

I would really recommend this hotel because it is right at the center of the city, it is safe, and the staff is very friendly and helpful, providing a personal atmosphere.
My room was pretty simple but clean, and compared to many other hotels in San José it offers very reasonable prices for the rooms. The bathrooms were also clean, and the breakfast was simple but sufficient according to the price.
I don't understand why someone would give a very bad evaluation without giving any reasons or providing any more information.

I´ve stayed one whole week in LA PENSION DE LA CUESTA and i loved it! Such a cute house with nice and clean rooms for a very good price and right in front of the police office so there´s no need to be worried about your safety in San José. Since august there are new, young owners who changed the style of the hostal a little bit, and i don´t know how it was before but now you´ve got free internet, an excellent service (book a trip, it´s worth it!) and the wonderful lounge where you feel like home, and the best thing is that the hostal is close to everything because it´s in the centre of SJ! I will definitively come back o my next trip!

  • Liked — Clearness, location, great price and amazing staff
  • Disliked — The man behind the front desk could be more attractive jejejeje
  • Tips/Secrets — Book your trips in the hostal to explore even in just one day the closest attracions around San José!

Pension la cuesta is definitely one of the best hostel in downtown San Jose,
the staff were very friendly and helpful, they gave me some free maps and bus schedule which was great. The location is great and there are bunches of restaurants, shops ,and supermarkets around, also the rooms are quite clean and comfortable. it was a wonderful experience staying in pension de la cuesta!

Every one at this pension was very friendly and helpful. There are lockers available to store valuables...you need your own lock. Breakfasts are Ok. Rooms and bathrooms clean....but it really was average for everything but location. In particular I would have like to have been able to read at night with out having to get out of bed to turn off the light...and rooms at the front can be noisy in the AM...but who sleeps in on holidays. I met very interesting people there.....but the building is very, very old and I felt the older rave reviews not quite accurate as there has been a change of ownership. Use of kitchen was great!!!

I stayed at the pension for 7 days. I stayed in a private room and i spent 8$ each days, they gave me discount becuase i stayed 1 week and i taked some tours with them.
I found the hotel clean, the shared bathrooms were clean and the staff very friendly.
I reccomend this hotel , it`s in a safe zone in front at the polce station and the price it`s very low in compare at what they give...free breakfast, use of kitchen and free internet.
See you guys next time!!

Can't imagine what the bad experience would be. I am an older single woman who had dental work done. Not wanting to spend money on hotels, I was well pleased with what $18 a night bought me. It was safe, acceptably clean, pleasant people, right round the corner from some excellent restaurants. Taxis always ready to ferry me around. Nice woman did my laundry cheaply. I didn't go out much after dark--but not from fear. Take an extension cord and a sink stopper if you go. I am going back for follow-up dentistry in a week and plan to stay there again. I don't like shared bathrooms--but these were clean. Americans have no business being so fastidious, I tell myself.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Built in 1920, first Bed and Breakfast of the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, it was once home and art gallery to a bevy of local and expatriate artists, including Otto Apuy, Diedre Hyde, and Guillermo Conte, as well as other poets, writers and filmmakers, a place where artists and authors gathered together in its past time. With its handcrafted classic wood frame structure of the entrance and the interior design like colonial style mosaic tile floor of early 19th century, you can see the traces of Costa Rican history and art trough the building. The hotel is located at downtown San Jose,a nice and safe neighborhood, surrounded by great variety of fine restaurants, main bus stations, grocery stores, 3-5 minutes walking distance.
