Owner description: A large collection of indigenous gold art.

The "gold museum" has been significantly improved since I last visited about 14 years ago. The exhibits are very well done and beautifully laid out. Great history, interesting artifacts, and some creative variations, such as the exhibit on architectural elements used in Costa Rican currency over the years. Well worth the time and cost.

At first sight, San Jose does not look like a very interesting or attractive
city. After a long walk from our hotel to the city centre we decided to visit
the museum for lack of alternatives and because we felt tired and sweaty.

The museum was a pleasant surprise and more than just an air-conditioned
resting place. It is relatively small and on three levels, with a spiral
staircase. One part is dedicated to numismatic and the history of the local
currency. The larger collection is about the costumes and history of the local
tribes and their use of gold artefacts.

There are several interactive activities and a couple of videos on a loop,
plus a nice gift shop. Museum staff proved to be kind, courteous and helpful.
Definitely worth a visit.

The building is quite beautiful, even though it is underground, light floods throughout. Great place to learn about Costa Rican aboriginal culture and the beginning of modern Costa Rica. Amazing photos and culture.

Built as an upside down pyramid below ground! We had a tour which provided very interesting information, but displays are in English/Spanish - so you can read much of the information yourself if visiting individually. Plan on at least an hour or so. Great place to learn about Costa Rica's history prior to when Columbus arrived there!

Look, is this a "must see." No. But it is worthwhile.
The museum displays interesting gold artifacts from the indigenous people and weaves the story of gold & currency into the lives of the native folk. There are 3 levels and I recommend the audio tour (confusing at first, until you understand how it is organized).

The display on current CR currency is also interesting.

So, if you have some free time in San Jose, do visit this museum.
