Owner description: A large collection of indigenous gold art.
Reviewed January 13, 2014

This exhibit, while built around gold, is really a whole anthropological exploration. There are dioramas of a pre-Columbian village and of different roles of individuals--like Healer, Warrior, Goldworker. It is very nicely laid out, with excellent informative explanations in English and Spanish. You can rent an audio-guide, which I did, but I found it didn't add much beyond what the written posted descriptions said and wasn't worth the extra cost. We left whe the museum closed, after two hours of viewing, and we could definitely have spent a little more time there! Well worthwhile!

I'm not aware of any gold collection this extensive elsewhere in the world. This is a dazzling, three-story, underground structure right near the National Theatre. The coin museum is on one of the halls. Also includes figurines, and lots of information on the development of Costa Rica going back several thousands years including the evolution of the indigenous peoples.

Worth 1-2 hours to go through in whatever level of detail you like.

It would be nice if they had tours in English and their publications in english too. We spent 45 minutes there and were able to cover everything and read everything that was available.

This museum exceeded our expectations as a combination of archeological exhibits and gold art work. It is definitely worth the time if you have any interest in early history and society of Costa Rica
