Owner description: A large collection of indigenous gold art.

The gold exhibition is fascinating, but even the building, the history and controversy surrounding it´s design and construction is a modern equivalent.
Well worth a visit, not usually crowded and a good introduction to life before the encounter with Europeans.

We have been fascinated with the yellow metal for ages. Alas, this museum is really attribute to the currency of Costa Rica , and not a history of gold. The layout is interesting with a top to bottom trip through currency, some history of older coinage on the first floor. As you descend the levels, you will find some artifacts of the indigenous people of CR, some wonderful piece done in different metals, woods and stone. Worth a trip if you are in the City for an afternoon.

The Precolumbian Gold Museum is located underground (below the Plaza de la Cultura), just off Avenida Central (the pedestrian walkway) in downtown San Jose. There is an impressive collection of incredibly detailed gold artifacts as well as pottery, stone object, sculpture and ceremonial objects. Admission price also includes entry to the Numismatic Museum at the same location. A fascinating look at the history of Costarican Currency that includes displays and a short movie in both Spanish and English.

There are innumerable precious artifacts, especially items of pottery and gold. Diagramas show facets of indigenous life. Items are well displayed with bi-lingual (English & Spanish) explanations.
