“Great exhibit!”
Reviewed July 29, 2013 via mobile

This is one of the few interesting sites to visit in downtown San José. The collection is large and very nicely displayed.

“More than just gold.”
Reviewed July 27, 2013 via mobile

Really enjoyed this museum. It's not huge and the focus is on gold artifacts but there were several other interesting exhibits. I thought it was a nice combination of cultural and natural history as well as art.

“Surprisingly good!”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

There isn't really much in San Jose and downtown is a bit of a dump but this is a real find. Interesting facts combined with great gold exhibits makes it worth a trip. The temporary exhibit of Sophia Ruiz art was also fascinating. Nice little cafe on the corner opposite the entrance too - good for lunch or a snack.

“Excellent way to start the trip”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

In order to ground our first time in Costa Rica, we planned time exploring San Jose's museums.

The Precolumbian Gold Museum was our favourite with a little bit of something for everyone.
Highlights included
the art gallery: Lola Fernández's work was on display and was stunning
the fine gold pieces were stunning, the intricacy in their work stunning
the vignettes of life in the time preColumbia area were great for families as children and adults gathered around exploring and learning...little ones pointing out items as adults read, or early readers practiced.

Warning: we almost did not find this museum and encountered someone else who could not find it and totally missed it. It has a lower entrance from the theatre, -- walk around the block and it is like you are walking into a bomb shelter or subway station....definitely worth hunting for andspending time exploring.

“quick history”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

we found it was pretty average in telling the story of where the money came from and how it has developed but it wasn't a very interesting story from the beginning. it should have been tied to other historical. it was a nice presentation and they have a good gift shop.
