I expected a bit more of a place called "national". It's a reasonable survey of the history and pre-history of CR but nothing too startling or thought-provoking. Reminded me that SJ is not all that big. Kudos to catering to English speakers though.

This is a great museum. It is part natural history, anthropology, archaeology, political history, as well as local history museum all housed in a building that is a piece of Costa Rican history itself and rivals Philadelphia's art museum in beauty. The first exhibit that I experienced was the butterfly garden which gives a lesson on the role of the butterfly in conservation and ecology. The exhibit on the history of democracy in Costa Rica was an unflinching look at the peoples' role in the shaping (both past and present) of democracy in their country. The exhibit on carbon footprints and environmental responsibility is both enlightening and very education for all ages (do not miss the film). The pre-Columbian gold exhibit was also fascinating as it explained the difference in beliefs about this sought after and fought after metal, of the native tribal peoples and the europeans who settled/attempted to settle the areas. Do not miss any part of this museum, take a day or a half (I tend to take longer in museums) and enjoy the education.

It is a beautiful setting and at least 4 different expo's. One on pre history that blew us away, also good explanation why there is no more military here and butterfly garden.

The museum is in an old fort that was decommissioned once the army was abolished. There is a fun butterfly garden, pre-Columbian artifacts, Social history exhibits, Jade exhibits. We had a good time learning more about this beautiful country and it's people. If you're considering visiting the Jade Museum after your trip to the National Museum, don't bother. The Jade and gold exhibit is better at the National Museum. Two hours seems to be a reasonable estimate to tour the museum. Also, old forts are cool.

This is well worthwhile as an inclusion in a visit to Costa Rica. It is interesting and even the museum-shy person can get something out of this one. There is even a butterfly enclosure with information about them in Costa Rica.
