The Costa ricans truly made a silk purse out of a sows ear on this one. This was formerly a horrible prison. The art exhibits are so, so, but it is worth it it browse through the halls and see past history. The kids part is great and the grounds are well maintained. It has a nice cafe. It is not in the best part of town so drive or take a cab. do not walk there.

Costa Rica is a little off of the beaten path for lovers of pre-columbian material but the museum does a a very good job of presenting its finds. These are not the wonders of the Maya, other Mexican civilizations, or the Peruvian ones. Much of what was found was taken from the country but what remains is still very significant. The exhibit of pre-columbian gold is very fine. As for the remainder, we did not see a lot of butterflies in the butterfly conservatory and clearly much that exists from the colonial period is still in private hands.

There are other exhibits in this museum but the main attraction of the National Museum is Pre-Columbian. Extensive and well explained. You begin your tour of the museum in a forest with butterflies and then go up a ramp to the Pre-Columbian exhibit.

Really impressive museum housed in old fort overlooking San Jose. Great place to visit on a Sunday afternoon and peruse through 5-6 different sections. It is full of authentic relics and examples of life over centuries in Costa Rica. Most of the information is also translated in english which is helpful to many.

Easy to walk to. Immaculate inside. Glad to pay for my entrance to keep artifacts available for viewing. Lots to see and learn.
