I enjoyed the museum. The butterfly garden was very calming and there were very pretty flowers in there. I also enjoyed the history part. I can tell they are renovating trying to improve themselves a bit. I speak enough Spanish to get by and can read it very well, but a few more things could have been in English just because I noticed we were not the only English speaking group of people.

“Not much there”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

This museum is limited in terms of space as well as content.as you come in you go through a garden which is ok but not so special. There is not much content in the museum and it will not help you much to understand Costa Rica and its history.
After this disappointing visit, we decided to skip other museums.

“Wished more descriptions were in English”

Part of the museum is attached to an old fort. It also contains a butterfly atrium. It is not the most impressive museum I have been to but it does illustrate the evolution of Costa Rica. Unfortunately a lot of the explanations are only written in Spanish , so if you do not speak spanish it could be very boring. The large spheres moved from the Pacific beg a ponderance and are known as Esferas de Piedra - are they man made? or extraterrestrial? Also there is a market at the bottom of the stairs outside the main entrance near the Plaza, worth taking a look at. It runs the whole block and is full of souvenirs.

A very large gorgeous building like a huge mansion on outside but you get in and within 5 minutes or less you have seen all that is available for tourist to tour. If you get really, truely, bored then go..

“Fascinating Museum in San José”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

If you have a chance, visit the National Museum of Costa Rica in San José. Located in an old fortress in el centro, your tour begins walking through a butterfly atrium. The museum displays the pre-Columbian history of Costa Rica. Of special interest are the large spherical rocks, "Esferas de Piedra". They weigh as much as 15 tons and are were made some 1200 to 1500 years ago. No one knows how.
