“Beautiful soothing B&B, friendly staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

I wouldn't stay in San Jose or San Pedro again unless I had to - I find the capital and this suburb where Hotel Milvia is located to be unpleasant. However, since I had to be in San Pedro for a few days, I'm very glad I spent it at Hotel Milvia. This beautiful old mansion-turned-hotel is a quiet and relaxing spot with a stellar staff who made me and my friends feel welcome and at home. The hotel also boasts quirky artwork everywhere, including the guest rooms.

There's also a good Japanese restaurant, a cafeteria with yummy food, and a grocery store all within two blocks.

A stay at this hotel is is like visiting dear people you know and trust. As a single female travelor, I always felt cared for and safe. This place is charming with comfortable couches to sit in & read inside in public areas and deck chairs outside on the upper terrace, with grand views. It is superclean. Each day, I looked forward to a breakfast of fresh fruits, juices, great homemade bread, various cereals and milk...and they would even bring you freshly cooked eggs on request.
The gardens have an array of beautiful tropical plants and interesting sculptures. I enjoyed meeting travelors from around the world at breakfast each day. Thank you Steve and Carlos for making me feel like I was coming home at the end of each day.

Room Tip: Keep in mind that this is a unique 'home'.

First off, re: finding the place, simply tell the cab driver that it's in San Pedro Montes de Oca. Tell him, "De Supermercado 'Muñoz y Nanne' 100 este 100 norte 100 este" and he will be able to find it exactly.

The closeness to this supermarket (actually a shopping complex) -- a quick walk -- is a plus. If this is your first stop on the trip, consider not packing some of your basic supplies/toiletries and buying them here before heading to your next destination.

Expect comfort and simple elegance in this charming hotel/B&B with funky artistic flair. The center courtyard is really pretty. The manager is very welcoming and helpful. You'll get a street map of the area showing restaurants within close walking distance. (Just look all ways carefully before crossing streets!) This, I guess, is a relatively quiet area of San Jose, near the universities -- but "quiet" is relative; my room overlooked a side street that was on the busy side. The breakfast buffet featured fresh fruit, cereal, bread, and of course coffee. I would stay here again, and recommend it to others.

Very nice place to stay. The manager and owner were helpful and friendly. The price was equivalent to a regular hotel. The Milvia had been the home of a prominent citizen of San Jose so it was roomy, well landscaped and nicely decorated with original paintings. Finding the hotel was an exercise; no one in the area knew where it was and the directions to the place are based on distances in meters, rather than turn left/right at this intersection or street.

One of the nicest places I have ever stayed in. Pleasant staff, interesting art, feels like home. But San Jose can be chilly and the doors and windows of main areas are always open so bring a sweater.

We are familiar visitors to Costa Rica – this would be our 6th trip. We had a different challenge this time, though. My husband would be racing in the staged mountain bike race, La Ruta de los Conquistadores, which starts in Jaco and ends in Limon. Since I would be traveling with him, instead of staying at the designated hotels organized by La Ruta, we wanted to make our own plans to stay at quiet, comfortable inns or B&B’s along the route. We were able to accomplish this with the help of Trip Advisor!

Day Two ended at the Terra Mall in Tres Rios, to the east of San Jose. Finding accommodations here was a little trickier. We opted for Hotel Milvia in San Pedro, which was a short drive away (15 minutes). Hotel Milvia is a lovely old house, with a beautiful courtyard and interesting art displays. The management was lovely. They have a massage room right on the premises, and the manager set up appointments for us with Maria, who did a great job, on very short notice. The rooms at Hotel Milvia are large, but very basic. The beds are OK, but not particularly comfortable, the bathroom is functional. The major downside for us was the nighttime noise, since the room’s window was along the road, so we were kept up by both vehicle and pedestrian noise. I don’t know if they have rooms that open onto a courtyard, but it is worth asking. Hotel Milvia is not a luxury hotel destination, but it works if you seek something a little more unique, convenient and affordable.

A cute artistic bed and breakfast! But its located approx 20 min from downtown san jose. The area is good tho - with banks, restaurants and little shops. We found a cute little bakery - we ate lunch an Italian place that was approx a 10 min walk away. GREAT FOOD there. And we also had a good dinner at Inka grill - a peruvian restaurant 5 min away. The rooms were clean and basic. The staff were REALLY friendly and helpful and sweet. The place was unique and the art was interesting.
