“great experience”

I enjoyed my stay at kaps. It was cozy and has a different feel from most hotels. If you are looking for the four seasons, this is not the place for you... I am not saying that the accomodations are not first class, they are. Some rooms have there own bathroom, some dont. For some you may need to go through another room, some through a back house. There are no elevators to access rooms above ground level, though there are several rooms on ground level. The place has a very bed and breakfast feel, but without the breakfast, though the coffee is really good. You are pretty much in the heart of the city, with many interesting places easily in walking distance.

My favorite place to stay in San Jose. Here's why:

*cozy, colorful, immaculately kept rooms -- each individually decorated with great attention to detail

*knowledgeable, friendly staff -- able to arrange tours & provide travel advice

*full kitchen available to guests

*wide selection of (free & unlimited!) teas

*big trampoline outside, plus sandbox & playroom for kids

*hammocks

*comfortable living room to talk to other travelers

*2 computers with fast, free internet

*wireless internet access

*quiet neighborhood - 10 minutes to walk downtown

*tiny rooftop balcony perfect for watching sunsets

Kap's has several different types of rooms--
--rooms with private baths & cable TV
--rooms with shared bathroom (shared between 2 rooms) & cable TV
--apartment with private kitchen, sitting area & cable TV
--"hostel-style" rooms with 1 bathroom shared among 3 rooms

The 3 hostel-style rooms are a great option for budget travelers. For a few dollars more than you would pay for a bunk in an 8-person room in an actual hostel, you get a private or semi-private (2 rooms are connected) room in a place that feels as comfortable & welcoming as a friend's house. The mattresses are MUCH BETTER than in hostels and the rooms are much quieter.

Highly recommended. I'm living in Costa Rica for a year & this is where I send my family & friends when they come to visit.

Kap's place is a truly unique find in San Jose. The staff is helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. They provide a plethora of services and go out of their way to accomodate your needs. They help you plan everything from a massage to a canopy tour through the jungle. (I've even seen doctors visiting the hotel to care for post-surgery patients.) If you are expecting a big American hotel, this is not the place for you. The rooms are immaculate, bright and cheery. For budget travelers there are a few rooms with a shared bathroom. However, the majority of rooms have a private bathroom and double bed. There is even an apartment which is perfect for families. (The trampoline and playroom are also great for people traveling with children.)

I am currently a volunteer living in rural Costa Rica and I cannot express how much look forward to my trips to Kap's Place. It's my home away from home.

Kap's Place is functional, but very spartan and funky. We had to go through someone else's room to get to ours! One shared bath among four larger rooms. Staff are friendly.

KapsOwner, Owner at Kaps Place, responded to this review, April 1, 2008
At the time of the review there was one "hostel" type room which was a walk through room. The label has remained as "hostel" however the rooms are completely private and it is only 3 rooms that share one bathroom. Our hotel has private apartments, family suites with jacuzzi, rooms with private bathrooms and all rooms are different -- thus, prices vary.

KAP's Place was one of the best places I have ever stayed. At a very modest price, they offer clean, well-appointed rooms, some with private bath, some with shared bath. However, as delightful as the facilities are, what makes this hotel so very special are the people who work there. They are consistently cheerful, friendly, and will do just about anything to make sure your stay is a great experience. They will help you with salon services (people will come to the hotel), normal travel arrangements, and are very responsive to requests of all kinds. (They will even share their family recipes for local dishes!) They have a way of making you feel as if you are a family friend, instead of a passing stranger. I cannot recommend it too highly!

Clean colorful and cheap. I would definitely stay again however this place is not for everyone. The rooms are small but cute. It is a great place for budget travelers. The staff and atmosphere is friendly and a good place to meet other travelers. It is located a bit outside of the city, about a ten minute walk to the heart of SJ. They have 2 newer computers with fast internet access which was a great plus. Do not stay here if you expect normal American hotel services (however they do assist with booking trips and calling cabs) or smoking in the rooms. Highly recommended for the right traveler.

Kap's Place was very nicely decorated, very colorful. Our room with 2 double beds, cable tv, bathroom with hot water was $42/ night and it was in the annex, around the corner from the main place. The annex has a nice sitting area and common kitchen with refrigerator. The main place has 2 computers with free internet access. They also greet you with coffee or tea. They even offer yoga in-house but I don't know if they charge, we had to leave before the next class was scheduled. The only thing a bit strange was that they had lots of rules that you needed to sign and agree to. The rules, however, are common sense, so if you have that, you'll have no problem. The people are very friendly. I would avoid the rooms right off of the main reception area because it can get noisy. They also have travel agent services for your convenience.
