I came here at two different occasions in March 2012 for a total of 3 nights stay. It's walking distance to shopping and eating. The rooms have beautiful hard wood floors and are more spacious then I was expecting.
The downfall would be noise. It seems to be placed on a rather busy street, and traffic in San José doesn't seem to ever die down much. But their is air conditioning so closing the windows is not a problem.

My partner and I stayed in the Villa Tournon for a total of 4 nights during the course of a VJV Costa Rica Garden of Eden holiday. On the first occasion we arrived at about 11:00 pm and were given a room facing the main road. Even though we were exhausted after a long flight from the UK we got very little sleep as the road is very busy on week days (less so on the weekend). The room was large and clean (I later found out it was a superior room). I asked if they had an alternative room the next day and they moved us without a quibble. Our next room was also a superior room on the same floor (level 3) but facing the pool - much quieter.

On our last night in Costa Rica we again stayed at this hotel. This time we were on the ground floor (level 1, room 103 I think) but were not in a superior room; the difference was marked as the room was much smaller, had twin beds which were very creaky, a broken vanity unit in the bathroom and smelt vaguely damp.

The hotel is definitely not a chain - it has an individual feel to it which we liked, but it generally felt tired and needed redecoration in some rooms.

We only ate breakfast in the hotel which was OK and plentiful, but wasn't particularly inspiring. For dinners we went to El Pueblo just up the street which had a couple of restaurants to choose from (both good).

Room Tip: Ask for a Superior room facing the pool / garden. Superior rooms are bigger and have double beds. Rooms facing the pool / garden are quieter than those facing the main road which are very noisy.

After 15 years of traveling to San Jose, Costa Rica, I finally found a great hotel for us. Hotel Villa Tournon offers safety, comfort, good food, and excellent services in an authentic Costa Rican urban setting for individuals, families, and/or touring groups.

If you want the best value for your money, and an enjoyable experience to remember, stay at Hotel Villa Tournon. We will! Thanks, Don Polly, Naples, Florida, U.S.A.

Room Tip: Just tell them what you want, and they will "bend over backwards" to meet your needs. My only suggestion for improvement would be to provide better handicapped accessibility to the beautiful outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi.

As a frequent traveler to Costa Rica, I have chosen Villa Tournon as my base in San Jose. I knew the original owner, a Dutch expat, who created a nice blend of European and Costa Rican elements for an atmosphere that is comfortable, solid, and still very tropical in feel. It has remained Costa Rican owned and operated and the staff has the wonderful Tico courtesy that endears us to this country. The location near the main highway to the Caribbean makes truck noise inevitable so be prepared and perhaps bring earplugs if this bothers you. (Traffic and street noise is a factor in all downtown hotels.) Entrance to the hotel is on the top (third floor) level and third floor rooms tend to be quieter. Like most downtown hotels, it has a casino and can have a Saturday night party going, but this is definitely not a party hotel. On the contrary, I often find student and church groups checking in and out at reception. The included buffet breakfast is very good - fruit, eggs, sausage, pancakes, toast, and the tasty Tico gallo pinto. The main restaurant offers lunch and dinner service with a fairly standard Costa Rican menu, and if this doesn´t suit, the hotel is only a block and a street crossing away from the restaurants and sodas of El Pueblo Center or a 10-15 minute walk from shopping and cafes in the central city. I have used many hotels in San Jose, but for comfort, location, and good price, the Villa Tournon is hard to beat.

Room Tip: Superior rooms have two queen beds and are spacious and airy. Ask for the third floor, northside if available.

The Villa Tournon is out of the City Centre, but within walking distance (10-15minutes).
There were some rooms that were a little tired and worn, but others were much better. We originally had a room at the front of the hotel & it was very noisy (a bar / singing), but the staff were happy to move us to another room.

Breakfast was served in a large dining room, with plenty of fresh fruit, juices, the usual beans & rice, toast, cereal etc. A few coffee addicts we travelled with said the coffee in the rooms was the best they'd had in Costa Rica.

The hotel bar was expensive, but just up the road (turn right out of the hotel & go up the road a little way - max. 3-5mins) on the left is a centre that has good restaurants if you didn't want to eat in the hotel.

The garden is pleasant for a City hotel, with a small pool & hot tub (go looking in the garden for it). There was a safe at reception, so you can go into the City without the worry of carrying all your valuables. Staff were helpful & on the whole friendly.

A reasonably priced city hotel, which is handy for the airport at the beginning & end of your trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room.
