Great historic hotel in downtown San Jose. Walking distance to the museums, shopping, theater, markets. Good food in restaurant. Beautiful stained glass, pictures, statues, great gift shop. Hot tub was not functioning, 'pool' looks more like a water fountain. Nice place to relax at the end of a day exploring the city. Superb front desk service.

We stayed there for a week and were totally pleased. Vans for the three day-trips we took picked us up there, and they can arrange the tours for you. The staff was competent and friendly; the food was quite good, varied and reasonable; our room was spacious and comfortable; and, best of all, the location allows one to walk easily to the main attractions in San Jose -- the National Park, the Jade Museum, the Avenida Central, and the Gold Museum. Also reachable though a bit further is the Public Market at the end of the pedestrian mall of Avenida Central. Also, as the other reviews state, the hotel is very attractive inside.

This is a charming hotel within walking distance of the zoo, a pedestrian shopping mall, lovely parks, and several museums. It was formerly the residence of an early president, so opulence is its middle name. The rooms surround a lovely open air garden with a decorative waterfall/pool, tables and chairs, and a small jacuzzi.

The restaurant is exellent, public computers are available, and the gift shop well stocked. All staff is outstandingly friendly and helpful and everything is kept spotless. One caveat: Pay attention to the tile and stone steps inside. It's easy to trip, and I can say from experience that landing on such hard surfaces is a memorable experience!

Also you might want to bring along facial tissues and washcloths, since they are not provided in the rooms -- typical for non-U.S. hotels.

Room Tip: If you get a room facing the street, it can be very noisy -- although I actually found it part of th...

We love Hotel Don Carlos and have stayed there many times during transitions from one part of Costa Rica to another. It is a beautiful little spot of calm and peace in the middle of crazy, bustling San Jose. The hotel is built around a central courtyard with fountains. Artwork and plantings are everywhere, and great lounges tucked into several nice spots. The rooms are not fancy, but clean and fine. Reasonable prices. The staff are outstanding, they speak multiple languages, and can help with all manner of hotel and general travelling issues, including getting you upstanding taxis. There is a very good buffet breakfast that comes with the room, served in the nice hotel restaurant. There are also tables in the courtyard and on a patio on the outside edge of the hotel where flocks of the big city parakeets often congregate. Three computers are available for free web access etc.

Besides being a reliable oasis on the way elsewhere in Costa Rica, Don Carlos is also a great base to explore San Jose. So many people have nothing good to say about San Jose, but we always have a fun time. Besides being a place to stock up on any crucial travel items, pharmacy etc, this part of town is great to explore and is perfectly safe. Try walking out around the Jade Museum across the street, and through a series of small parks to the south and west. Cut down to Avenida Central, the bustling pedestrian street, and walk along with the crowds to the big square around Teatro Nacional and the Museo de Oro. Hot tip: best bank ATMs we have been able to find in San Jose are across the street from Museo de Oro at Scotia Bank: you can get a full $500 worth of colones or $$ in one transaction with a small fee (< $2), and in denominations you can actually use. Be sure to dive into Mercado Central btw Calles 6 and 8 for some great local flavor, check out the overflowing produce, meat, seafood, and spice stalls etc. Don't be afraid to eat a casado and have a batido (fresh blended fruit drink) in one of the little sodas inside. Get something tasty from a neighborhood panaderia. Walk down to the zoo or the butterfly house, north of Don Carlos. There is a fantastic restaurant just up the street, Cafe Mundo, with tons of atmosphere, full of hip locals, good food. You can have a blast in this town, if you just give it a chance.

Room Tip: Upstairs is quietest, upper SW corner quietest of all.

We really enjoyed our two nights at Hotel Don Carlos. Very quaint, historic hotel. Very small, simple and comfortable. We really enjoyed the restaurant on site and ate there both nights. We stayed in one of the closest rooms to the lobby and the wifi worked in our room...which was an added bonus!

I highly recommend Hotel Don Carlos. Great service. Reasonable price. The staff members speak English. They can book any excursions for you. The hotel is like a museum with original paintings collected by Don Carlos. Many sculptures by local artists and fountains on each level of a large inner courtyard with many other fine details. Chair and lounges to sit and admire the decor and relax to the sound of the fountains. Dinner was great at a reasonable price and you get a free buffet breakfast.
