“Enjoyed our stay!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2009

This hotel is in a quieter part of downtown San Jose, within walking distance of Barrio Amon and the parks. We really enjoyed the style of the hotel, the charm of the older buildings, unique rooms and the fabulous courtyards and gardens inside. Our favorite part would have to be the lovely open-air patio right off of the lobby.

The rooms were spacious and clean, however they have no a/c. We were fine with the ceiling fan, however, some rooms do not have fans. The only downside is that we could hear the neighbor's television very well from our room. It was on all night and we woke up several times.

There is a free internet center and safes in each room. The front desk staff were there 24 hrs and the hotel felt very secure. There is no restaurant on site, but they provide a full breakfast each morning in the dining room, which is lovely.

I do feel the kitchen staff could be friendlier - they seemed inconvenienced at times. The hotel keeps hot coffee in the lobby and one day while we were there we couldn't seem to get them to fill it up with hot coffee. We finally gave up on it and walked down the street for coffee.

All in all, I would definitely enjoy going back to Hotel Aranjuez.

This hotel came highly recommended for its great value and breakfast. After 4 wonderful nights of peace and quiet on the Caribbean, this was not the best end to our trip. It was reminiscent of a college dormitory: lots of noise in adjacent rooms, slamming doors, the traffic outside. The downtown location is great. Its within walking distance to everything. The staff was very nice and helpful and there are lots of freebies: the breakfast, the secure parking, the internet, cable tv. It only cost $40 for a room with private bath, but if you stay here, bring earplugs or get a room at the back by the gardens. The ones near the road are just too noisy and the walls just too thin.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night as the capstone to a beautiful Costa Rican vacation. We only needed to stay one night in San Jose as we were flying home the next morning. I honestly wish we had an excuse to stay here longer. I'm not gonna lie, San Jose is an intimidating city but from the moment we stepped into Hotel Aranjuez, I felt safe and at peace. The hotel really feels more like a big, authentic South American home. The garden where they serve breakfast is beautiful and you forget that you are in the capital city. I also loved exploring the various hallways and nooks containing authentic art and comfy sitting areas. Keep in mind you are in Costa Rica, the rooms here are simple but comfortable. Set your expectations appropriately and you will realize that this place is an unique gem. If you want a simple, authentic and friendly place to stay in San Jose, I don't think you can go wrong with Hotel Aranjuez!

We had a nice stay at the Hotel Aranjuez in San Jose, Costa Rica in April, 2009. We were only there for one night, but we the room was decent enough. It had a large king sized bed, private bathroom with shower, ceiling fan and was satisfactory enough. We were expecting the rooms to be nicer, but although they weren't top drawer, they were comfortable enough to get a decent night's sleep.

The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, spoke English and willing to go out of their way to make the stay better. There is a bank within walking distance and we were able to go exchange our money easily. There are many restaurants and stores in this area of San Jose, so that made it easy to get out and get a meal, etc.

The best part of the stay, however, was the absolutely delicious breakfast they prepared for us in the morning, which comes with your room rate. There were piles of beautiful fruits, oatmeal, pancakes, yummy fruit drinks, teas, coffees, breads, coffee cakes, eggs, meats - you name it - it was just scrumptious and I highly recommend it.

Hotel Aranjuez isn't an uptight, high-class hotel, but it is a funky, homey, friendly and different place to stay and I recommend it to people who like to try something different and who love a GREAT meal.

For the price Arunjuez is a good option – perfect for what we wanted – an overnight stay after flying in and before busing out of San Jose in the morning. A plus is the huge breakfast buffet in the garden and the free internet. We stayed on two occasions, once in a superior room and the second time in a superior plus room ($3) extra. The $3 more you pay for a superior plus room is well worth it as it’s a much nicer room (bigger, seats, a table) and has a large TV (in size and channel choice), faces the garden so has a better view and is much quieter.

This hotel is exactly what it markets itself as, nothing more and nothing less. My girlfriend and I went to Costa Rica with the intention of doing two days worth of day trips from San Jose to various parts of the country. We knew that we would likely be leaving very early in the morning and likely not coming home until late at night. For our purposes this hotel was perfect. We had a less than desirable room in the front of the hotel that had windows facing the street, which definitely made it louder than we would have liked it at night. The beds were not the most comfortable, and the bathroom door didn't really close, but I think we just got a bum deal on the room as other reviews have been quite positive about the rooms. But again, by the time we got home at night, we really just wanted a place to sleep. To avoid our experience with respect to the room though, I would definitely recommend requesting an interior room away from the street.
As other people have said in their reviews, the breakfast really is very good. For those of you who are making your first trip to Costa Rica, this isn't your standard continental breakfast. It's a breakfast buffet that should satisfy just about every pallet (just don't expect your standard sausage and eggs, although you can get a home-made omelet with whatever you like).
The one thing I think needs to be mentioned is the area. From the early morning through the early evening the area is fine, with people mulling about and plenty of traffic on the streets. However, when my girlfriend and I got back from a day trip at around 8pm and wanted to go out to dinner the place was desolate. We asked the front desk where we could go to dinner and they told us there was a nice place only 6 blocks away. They gave us directions, told us we could walk it. I have been in a lot of places, but this was the longest 6 blocks I have ever walked. No one was on the street, there were barely any cars coming by and there were very few street lights. My girlfriend was definitely a little scared and I have to admit that I was uncomfortable as well. Bottom line is, we should have taken a taxi. And getting a taxi is no problem, as the front desk can get you one right away, and every taxi knows where the Hotel Aranjuez is if your heading back.

All in all, we felt that we got exactly what we paid for, and were happy because of it.

This charming hotel is three houses that are strung together. It is clean, and in a central location in the city. You can walk to typical costa rican restaurants and bakeries. It is a good place to catch buses to other places. We really liked the garden which is a nice place to walk around. My daughterreally appreciated the computers they had in one room so she could check her email. The staff were helpful and spoke English well.
