“Very Impressive Breakfast Spread”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

Hotel Aranjuez is an quirky hotel that looks like a string of once private homes connected together to form a labyrinth of halls leading to hidden rooms. The location is nothing special, the rooms are spacious and clean yet basic and no frills, and the breakfast is excellent. In our two weeks traveling through costa rica, we didn't experience another breakfast like it. For about $50 it's a great value hotel.

We stayed in this hotel for only three nights when passing through San Jose and found it to be comfortable and nice place to stay.
We stayed in superior and superior pluss rooms that were nice, big and clean each with its own character. The receptionists were nice and helpful with ordering the taxies and answering the questions we had. The hotel is located in a quiet, nice neighbourhood within a walking distance from the downtown.

The most charming feature of this hotel is its architecture. The hotel is formed by several houses joined togeather by gardens and hallways. A good breakfast in the middle of the garden surrounded by flowers and trees is an experience of its own. My son got extatic when he saw a colibri while eating breakfast.

If its your first time in the hotel, remember that people stand up and go to bed early in Costa Rica and the rooms do not have the best sound isolation, so the place needs to be quiet in the evenings. Another thing to know is that it can take a day or two before you get an answer to your reservation request.

All in all, most charming place to stay.

This is a great hotel in the Aranjuez neighborhood of San Jose. It's a lot quieter than downtown and pretty safe. The rooms were clean and were nice sizes. We stayed two nights in two different rooms and enjoyed both superior plus rooms. The staff is friendly and helpful and got us a cab at 4am. The best part for sure is the breakfast buffet.. Which includes made to order omelettes and tons of options. And it's all included in your room rate. Totally worth it! Highly recommend if you're looking for a hotel a little out of downtown in a nice neighborhood.

We had a good time at this hotel even tho we were just passing through san jose. We mainly just went there to sleep but found it comfortable and inviting during our short stay. A bit of a language barrier although still able to comprehend. Met some really nice russians while there and deciphered hands gestures to talk. Overall good time.

Aranjuez Hotel is a perfectly fine hotel with the best breakfast... ever!

We stayed in two rooms - the first time was a superior suite $56 and the second time was a smaller room with a shared bathroom $30.

The beds are comfy, the internet was strong - even in the bedrooms.

The staff here are really friendly and helpful and speak good English. They are pretty anal about things but that is probably good, unless you don't have what they need.

The stand out however is the breakfast. The breakfast is a crazy, amazing buffet of delicious things and we would have stayed there just for that!

We had to leave the second time because we went to book extra nights and the hotel was full. I get the feeling it is full often, so it is really worth booking in advance for as many nights as you will need. Let them know as soon as you do, or you will have to find another place to sleep!

We ended up going to Costa Rica Guest House which is also lovely (and has great common areas) although the breakfast is not as good.

Room Tip: In the second room (shared bathroom) I noticed a hole in the floor under the bed which let in a coup...

When in San Jose we now only stay at Hotel Aranjuez - if they aren't already full when we call. The one time we stayed somewhere else for a little more money the room was a little fancier but there was no breakfast and the location was busier. We really like the location because it gets fresh air on the hillside, it feels secure, and is a short walk to the Plaza de Democracia and other downtown areas. Also, the taxi ride to the airport avoids the downtown and is quicker.

The staff is very friendly and helpful in English or Spanish and always make us feel at home. For a fancier, more standard hotel experience, they now have a high-rise hotel across the street - and you can still have the lovely breakfast in the garden.

Room Tip: The houses off the lobby have the old Central America feel and some of the rooms have shared baths...

I would give this hotel an excellent rating except for one thing: when I made the reservation online, they requested my credit card information in order to confirm my request. I obliged, assuming that we'd be paying for the hotel with our credit card when we arrived. I had a confirmed rate in the e-mail, but when we went to pay our bill, I was told that they would only honor that rate if we paid cash. If I wanted to use my credit card, the rate would be higher. I searched my e-mails, and could not find any mention of this. We paid the lower rate with cash, but I think they should make this clear in their e-mail correspondence.
Everything else was very nice - the personnel, the magnificent breakfast buffet, the rooms. We met a lot of interesting people there from all over the world!

Room Tip: Think twice about the rooms with shared bathrooms. The small extra cost for the private bath is well...
