“Aranjuez - Good Choice”
Reviewed January 22, 2008

We chose Aranjuez after researching nearly all the hotels in the downtown San Jose area on trip advisor and other internet sites. We were in need of two rooms for one night only before leaving Costa Rica.

The hotel is about 30 minutes ($15-$17 taxi ride) from the international airport and is located in what seems like a residential district. The walk to the Central Market (a must see while in town - crazy!) is about 20 minutes - and with the help of the hotel provided map and a couple questions to street vendors along the way - was easily found. I had been to San Jose before, so perhaps that made the find a bit easier. If you are at all nervous about the walk, it certainly is worth the $10 cab ride to put your mind at ease.

The rooms were very clean, ceiling fans kept the room perfectly cool and a nice breeze blew throughout the entire hotel as the hallways are open to several garden-like seating areas. This hotel is actually four or five old homes linked together. Hardwood floors and beautiful artwork throughout. Three computers with internet access are available.

There is a small convenience store 1/2 a block away for snacks, sodas, water, etc.

We ate dinner at Vesuvio, which is an Italian restaurant attached to another nearby hotel. The walk was about 8 blocks - however I suggest paying a couple dollars for a cab ride if going after dark. The meal was very good - the wine awesome. Five of us ate a pasta meal and had a glass of wine for $60 US.

The hotel provided a free breakfast which was very very nice. Served in a garden area were made to order omelets, pancakes, a wide variety of fruits and pastries, as well as juices and coffee.

The only down side was the noise in the hallways - but it's no different than being a guest in someone's home and hearing them walk through the hall or clank a little in the kitchen in the mornings.

The price is certainly right. We had a room with two double beds/private bath and another room with a queen bed, two twins and a private bath for a grand total of $90 US.

Our family agreed we would stay at this hotel again when in San Jose. If you are at all considering the Best Western Downtown - DO NOT stay there. I did on a previous trip and it was a nightmare.

I called the hotel the night before I left and they were booked. I was disappointed because it sounded perfect especially based on the price private rooms w/ bathroom for under $40. When we arrived in town I decided to try one last time and the lady from the tourism booth called the hotel and they did have a room with shared bathroom available. It was $25. Quite a deal!. The room was basic but quite nice because the hotel is essentlially a large house with lots of unique rooms. As if the deal wasn't sweet enough they throw in a full american style breakfast complete with all the fixins., Including pastry's, juice, omelette/Pancake grill with dishes made to order, and of Course great Costa Rican Coffee. The other stand out was the Garden. There are tables set out in the garden and on a raised eating area adjacent to the Garden. It is great you feel like you have already landed in Manual Antonio or Corcovado. It is lush with native flora and flauna. Definetly a great location.

We stayed three nights there and enjoyed our stay. This hotel is several older converted houses strung together so the rooms vary and it has a bit of a "warren" feel to it but overall we found that charming.
The breakfasts and garden- breakfast area are great and we really enjoyed lingering over coffee among the flowers.
It's an easy walk to downtown but maybe not at night, but that's true of San Jose in general, I think (or any city where razor wire is a common architectural feature.)
The staff were very friendly and helpful and contrary to one review above, were still accommodating late breakfast arrivals a full half hour after the posted closing time.
I'd stay there again.

This hotel is by far the best value you can find.
For only 38 dollars, you have a really nice room with double bed, tv with plenty of channels, private bathroom. All really clean.
The really good breakfast is included, and the patio where you take it, is really nice too.

Do not hesitate on this hotel!

After reading the great reviews and seeing Hotel Aranjuez's beautiful
website, we had great expectations. We were a bit disappointed at the
quality of the hotel for the price, especially after we traveled around Costa Rica a bit. At $38 per night, it was one of the highest rates we paid (during the green season) for one of the least appealing places. The bathroom was literally a water closet, very small with mold on the walls. The sheets smelled of mildew and the walls were paper thin - our room was next to the patio area so sleeping was not possible until other travelers who were visiting had gone to bed. We were unable to have breakfast the next morning, which I'm sure would have been amazing, and we were also disappointed
that the staff were unwilling to make accommodations for us (like a fruit plate or even a banana) as other hotels graciously did. I would
recommend finding another place in San Jose.

Stayed one night. The room wasn't fancy, but quite fine, and definitely a fine price at approximately $35/night. My room had no air conditioner and the ceiling fan didn't work, but a portable fan was already in the room and worked well. Pay in cash.

Pros: Excellent value for the money. Clean & pleasant room. Excellent breakfast in a nice, atmospheric backyard. Reserved parking seemed secure (though with the possibility of a 2nd person parking behind me, I'm not sure how I would have moved my car if I'd been trapped in.) Handy free internet connection. Pleasant common areas. Friends in town confirmed this was safe area in SJ.

Cons: Hated the fax only reservation policy. When I had to change my reservation to only one night, I had to ask my previous hotel to use their fax, but Aranjuez didn't penalize me for dropping one night of a 2-night reservation. Walls were a little thin -- the people next to me thankfully were quiet. Don't know how I would have found it by driving (I followed a local friend to get there), but that's SJ, not their fault.
