“Clean, comfortable, friendly, good value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2007

My partner and I were very pleased with our stay here. A healthy complimentary breakfast was provided every morning which could be enjoyed in the hotel's beautiful, quiet, garden. The city is relatively small and there are not very many monuments or cultural sites to visit but we were within walking distance of practically all of them. Our room was very large, spotlessly clean (my partner is a clean-freak and he gave all the surfaces a tissue-paper test as soon as he waled in the door) and we had our own television with remote. We were on the street-side of the hotel but the noise was not bad at all. Complimentary coffee was available in the evenings and the staff were friendly and chatty. Cesar, our hard-working and efficient host, arranged our pick up from SJO, helped us with all our daily arrangements (places to visit, restaurants, things to do, etc.) and took the time to chat with us in the evenings. As we were leaving the hotel to return to Los Angeles, he presented us with a complimentary bottle of wine as a "Thank you from the hotel". That's the first time any hotel has ever done that for us. Talk about a class act!

We had a wonderful stay. The staff was great, very professional and helped us in organizing our tours which were perfect too. The rooms are clean and the free breakfast is health with a great variety, even eggs. It's just a short walk to everywhere. What else do you want? We have stayed in many San Jose during the last few years, but Kekoldi is definetly the best. They are going to have a hotel in Granada, Nicaragua in december 2005. We can't wait to visit Nicaragua soon.

We stayed a couple of night here. The hotel was well-run, the room (facing the street) was fine, and relatively quiet. The staff were very helpful. Breakfast in the back garden was wonderful.

San Jose is good for maybe 1 or 2 days, but it wears out fairly quickly. Best to travel to the rest of the country and experience some of the greenery.

When we go back to Costa Rica, we'll stay here again.

Oh yeah, most of the clients are gay, which is a good thing. It's fun to travel in the gay subculture, because people are so friendly and human, with lots of stories and advice to give. Make sure you are comfortable with that before you decide to stay there.

We stayed at two gay hotels in San Jose, one on the way into Costa Rica, and one on the way out. The Kekoldi was on our trip back through San Jose, and was the nicer of the two. It was also a little more expensive, but you do get what you pay for. I suspect you're definitely paying a premium to be in a gay hotel, but all in all, it was still cheap, about $49 single or so (off season, Aug2004)

The rooms were comfortable, airy, though a little spartan. The back garden is a nice place to have breakfast, which is included with the room.

The staff at Kekoldi is very friendly and very helpful, and able to set you up with all the major sightseeing trips that every other hotel also pushes.

The only complaint I would have is that it's a bit loud. I had a room by the front door, and it's pretty much impossible to sleep late when people start coming/going in the morning. Try to get a room upstairs if you want to sleep in. Also somewhat annoying are the trannie prostitutes on ALL the corners in this fairly busy neighborhood at night. There were dozens, everywhere. They didn't seem dangerous but they could get pretty bothersome if you're walking by. Cabs are plentiful and cheap, take them to avoid the nuisance.

I wouldn't recommend more than a day or maybe two in San Jose-- it's a dump. For the day or two you'll be in San Jose, the Kekoldi is a convenient cab ride to the several gay nightclubs. Otherwise there's not a lot of reason to linger in San Jose.

I spent over a week at the Hotel Kekoldi and thought that it was a really great choice. It's a pleasant place near but not quite in the center of town, with spacious and comfortable rooms and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff. They also have a really pretty back garden, in which breakfast (included in room price) is served each morning with coffee available throughout the day. I would highly recommend Kekoldi, although probably just for a night or two (not because of the hotel, but because that's all you really need in the sleepy little city of San Jose...)

They stuck us in the very front room facing a very busy street. The windows might as well have been open. Traffic, honking and people yelling most of the night. They gave us no soap. Most of the staff was very friendly and helpful except one guy who was very rude and indignant, especially when I forgot a few Spanish words. We stayed 2 nights. We reqested a back room when we got back from Manuel Antonio a week later (we had already pre-paid for this hotel). They put us in the exact same room with no apologies, but we got soap! Don't stay here! Forget it!
