“Nice building and decorations”

Not a huge theatre (this isn't Vienna after all) but very well presented and decorated lobby. The cafeteria and souvenir shop are well worth a visit.

“Culture and Class”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

This is not what most people come to Costa Rica to see, but if you are spending time in the city at all and are interested in partaking of any of the cultural attractions, this is really the place to go.

It is a classy venue, so you will be out of place in the typical expat fare of shorts and a t-shirt. Better to suit up or at least wear a decent pair of slacks and a button-up shirt (or a dress if you are a woman).

If you are interested in seeing an opera, ballet, orchestra, etc. then this is really the premier place to go in Costa Rica, if you can get your tickets far enough in advance before the event (they usually fill up pretty quickly). There are actually a few other up-scale theaters nearby, but the national theater is definitely king.

Even if you don't go to an actual event in the theater, if you are in downtown San Jose it is still worth looking at the theater from the outside and walking through the lobby area open to the public. The architecture as well as some of the sculpture on display is pretty impressive and worth spending a half hour or so just to check out the sights. And if you don't have tickets and are just going to see the grounds there is no dress code, so you can catch it just as you are passing through the city.

“Beautiful!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2013

If you happen to be in the San Jose area, you can't miss the National Theater. It is gorgeous and has a very interesting history. I would recommend a guided tour to really appreciate this place fully. You don't have to book through a tour company. You just buy a ticket at the ticket window inside the theater and ask when the English tour is. The day we went it was only offered at 3 P.M. So if you have limited time, try to check it out then. There is also a cafe in the theater that has a great atmosphere and delicious crepes.

“Worth the Trip to the City”

Take the guided tour if you can and take lots of pictures. This building is a gem and I highly recommend visiting. This is small, intimate and the acoustics wonderful. Worth a trip to the city for sure.

“Wow! What a gem.”

Attended a concert on a recent Saturday night. It was my first time inside and my first concert here.
What a gorgeous venue. Small, intimate, perfectly preserved, wonderful acoustics, and well designed. A must see if you enjoy cultural pursuits.
