“Look in the paper to find a play”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

This is one of the few buildings in all of Costa Rica that has culture. There is a restaurant inside and tours available. I went and saw the play, the Odyssey here. It was very good although there was a kid behind me crying the whole time and the usher there was standing right by me so I couldn't take pictures. I would suggest seeing a play here. This play was being shown Wednesday thru Friday and cost $4 and ran about an hour and 15min. I'm not sure if that is always the show times but I know they don't have a play every single week. They also don't show online when or what they are performing, a friend of mine said you need to look in the newspaper. If you go to a night time showing you are not allowed to wear shorts. There is also very little leg room when sitting down. But still I would recommend trying to see a play if you are in San jose

“fantastico!”

Neobaroque architecture with a Costa Rican twist. Well worth the inexpensive entrance fee.
See the murals and ceiling paintings of rural life in Costa Rica!

“Absolutely stunning”

The National Theater was hands-down my favorite attraction in San Jose; I loved everything about it. The architecture and decor are beautiful, and the history of the theater is fascinating. I sat in the cafe and drank a cup of coffee while I soaked in the atmosphere (original French-style tables and chairs, painted ceilings, gorgeous tiled floors). I also went on a tour of the rest of the theater (it was incredible, and completely worth the price). My tour was in English (Spanish is also available), and my guide was extremely knowledgeable.

“Only if you haven't seen anything like this before”

If you visit it, there are guides, but only in Spanish. Only if you haven't seen anything like this before in Rome or so, worth the visit. Nice coffee/food place. Cost relatively high $ 8,--.

I liked the elegant atmosphere being surrounded with top caliber museum quality marble statues and impressive architectural columns with decorative ceiling, but the cuisine was surprisingly delicious!
