Had been here during July 2009. Must have undergone few changes since then. Very beautiful place to spend an afternoon. The explanation they give are very interesting and informative. One of the oldest theaters I have been to. The presidential suite is something I admired. The orchestra troops on the first floor plays very good music and you can catch them live sometime if you are lucky. Recommend to anyone visiting San Jose.

What a beautiful old building this theater is! Probably the most spectacular architectural wonder in San José. They have concerts routinely here, including over the lunch hour, but you can always just pop in for a short tour as well. The outside is undoubtedly regal, but even so, it does not prepare you for what you witness when you step into the interior.

Note, there is also a very nice café attached to this theater on the inside that serves up delicious pastries and coffee. May be a bit overpriced though...

Insider tip: visit the theater at night, too, and you will be treated to a brilliantly illuminated outer facade! (Just make sure to take a taxi and be vigilant, as the area is not the safest after dark.)

If you visit beautiful Costa Rica don't miss an opportunity to take in a performance at this stunning building. You can pay to have a look inside during the day, and if you are lucky one of the many performers at this theatre will be in rehearsal, so you can watch. There is an extensive performance program including music, opera and dance, so check the notices at the entrance to see what is on. It costs very little to attend and is excellent. You can also have a good meal or simply coffee at the cafe adjoining the Teatro. cardboard sailors Toronto NSW Australia

To our minds, this is the number one and only tourist attraction in San Jose. It is a dont miss. In addition to learning about the history of the lovely building, much other helpful cultural information was imparted by our wonderful and informative guide Jeffrey Meza. Thanks so much!
