“Best you will find in San Jose!”
Reviewed March 23, 2014 via mobile

We spent 2 nights here before heading out to the Nicoyan peninsula. We found every aspect of Hotel Grano De Oro to be outstanding. The restaurant, which is found in the center of the Hotel with a charming outdoor courtyard, is both elegant and romantic. Not inexpensive, but if this property was in the US, it would be twice the money!

My boyfriend and I stayed here on our last night of a 10 day stay in Costa Rica. We wanted to be close to the airport and we were so happy we picked this place! It was such a cute hotel that used the old Victorian feel and made it modern. We had a garden room which was very peaceful and comfortable. We walked around San Jose but couldn't wait to get back to the hotel to enjoy some of our best meals of the trip. We arranged a transfer to the airport which was on time and reliable. I would highly recommend this place!

We stayed at Grano de Oro for one night at the end of our trip in Costa Rica. The hotel itself is not very big, it is a boutique hotel, but very well appointed. The decor is nicely done in a classic style. We ate at the restaurant for dinner, which was great… I will post a separate review for it. We occupied room 19 with double beds, it was comfortable and located in a courtyard. We do have two things to point out: the bathroom smelled and we suspect that the odor came from the water (although the faucet water is filtered, it could be from the shower or toilet water). The smell was unbearable. Also because the rooms are all so close to each other, when the neighbors woke up at 6am slamming the doors, we could clearly hear them talking. Lastly, the location is not very good. Even though it is central to the city, it is not in a good location. In fact, the hotel being so pretty, it kind of sticks out in the run down neighborhood like a sore thumb. We ventured out to walk around the main areas (20 min walk) to the Gold Museum and the market and got a headache from the crowds and the smell. It definitely was not worth it.

If I had to do it all over it again, I would skip our night at this hotel altogether.

We selected this hotel for our first night in Costa, before departing for Drake Bay. It has a contemporary lobby, and more traditional old world style rooms. Very well appointed. Safe, coffee maker, hair dryer and private open air patio from our room.
The staff was helpful and delightful. We had lunch, drinks and breakfast, and all were excellent.

Stayed here 2 nights post cruise. What a lovely property! Fabulous high ceilings, comfortable king size bed with great linens. Good A/C but not needed with windows open and ceiling fan on. We were able to walk to downtown San Jose from the Hotel. The staff was very helpful. Good wifi which was nice after traveling around Costa Rica. Will definitely return to this hotel if in the area again.

As previous reviewers have indicated, the Grano de Oro is a fine hotel property. The service is excellent, rooms are nicely appointed and both the garden and hot tub areas are pretty, comfortable and restful. The restaurant, which I will review separately, is world class. If there is a problem with the hotel it is its location in the middle of nothing nice. You can walk a few blocks to a slew of fast food places and the art museum, but otherwise, there is nothing. Going out after dark is not recommended by the hotel staff (or me.) We used the Grano de Oro as a base for touring before we embarked on a cruise at Caldera. This was a mistake; although the tours to various gardens and volcanos were pleasant enough, we spent more time on buses in incredible traffic than we did at the sites. The hotel was efficient in organizing transportation from the airport and to the port at reasonable prices as well as recommending and booking day tours. The hotel seemed to be crowded with people coming and going in all directions and the hotel staff was terrific at getting everyone to the right place on time. I would return to Grano de Oro for one night on the way to/from a cruise port, otherwise, no matter how grand the service is, there's no reason to stay there.

The Grano de Oro was our last stop on a two-week trip to Costa Rica. We arrived at the Grano de Oro on March 10th, around 10:30 am, after flying to San Jose from Punta Islita. This was my wife’s first trip to Costa Rica and my fourth. We also stayed at Hotel Manatus, El Silencio Lodge, and the Hotel Punta Islita, all of which I have also reviewed.

We only stayed at the Grano de Oro for one night, but it was so outstanding it deserves its own review! The converted Victorian mansion is just fabulous from top to bottom. There are photos on all the walls in the passageways that were extremely interesting, and I wished for some kind of information about them but nothing was available. They were all taken over the last 100 years or so and showed so much about the development of Costa Rica.

We had booked the special garden suite on the first floor, and it was ready for us upon arrival. The gareden suite was all the we expected. It was spacious, well appointed, clean, and most of all, it felt like home. The bathroom with its huge Jacuzzi was perfect.

We originally planned to venture into town for the afternoon to visit some museums, however we ended up changing our plans and decided to stay in at the hotel. This turned out to be a great decision. We ended up having lunch and dinner, two of our best meals in Costa Rica, at the hotel's restaurant which is world class and as good as any you will find in the world's culinary capitals. Absolutely outstanding!

After experiencing the level of comfort and service at the Grano de Oro, we will absolutely not return to Costa Rica without making it our first and last stop. Bravo Grano de Oro! Thank you so much!

All the best,

Roberto and Juanita

Room Tip: The Garden Suite is truly superb!
